Emotional Sean Longstaff posts goodbye video after leaving Newcastle for Leeds

After almost 20 years on Tyneside, where he’s been at Newcastle United since the age of nine, Sean Longstaff has departed.

He joined Leeds in a £15m deal on Friday night, following the announcement and the four-year deal signed at Elland Road with an emotional goodbye video that looks back on his memorable two decades in black and white.

Longstaff went from kicking the ball about with his brother in North Shields to playing over 200 games for his boyhood club, scoring in the Champions League and lifting a trophy at Wembley in his final season at Newcastle.

Watch his parting message below as he leaves the Toon for a new challenge in Yorkshire:

The man for the big moment

Most Toon fans will remember Longstaff for his goal against PSG in the Champions League, beating Gianluigi Donnarumma at his near post, met with a thunderous reception from the crowd at St James’ Park.

But Longstaff’s contributions to the club could be considered criminally underrated. His penalty against Nottingham Forest ultimately lead to our triumph in the 2025 Carabao Cup.

Even when he was breaking through under Rafa Benitez, he looked like he was going to be the next top prospect from the North East: there was an exceptional display against Manchester City in a 2-1 win against Pep Guardiola’s side back in 2019, winning the penalty that Matt Ritchie converted for all three points.

It’s a fantastic signing for Daniel Farke’s Leeds, and if he can stay fit, they’ll be a strong contender to survive the relegation battle this season.
