£25m Newcastle bid fails - David Ornstein update as Toon push for striker signing
Some breaking news has emerged on Tuesday afternoon as Newcastle United step up their pursuit of Yoane Wissa.
After revealing last week that we were exploring a deal to sign the Brentford striker, The Athletic's David Ornstein reports that Newcastle have now had an opening bid REJECTED for the 28-year-old.
Ornstein reports that our offer came in at £25m, marginally more than Nottingham Forest's first bid earlier this month.
However, despite the initial setback, it's believed Newcastle are continuing to pursue the Congolese international, knowing personal terms would 'not be a problem.'
Ornstein also confirms that Wissa is set to hold face-to-face talks with Brentford chiefs over his future, with growing suggestions that he is keen to leave in search of European football.
I imagine player power has changed a lot here. With Thomas Frank, Christian Norgaard and Bryan Mbeumo already gone, Brentford would have every right to stand firm and refuse to sell.
This could still be the case, but now Wissa has given the clearest indication yet that he wants out after leaving their training camp, Brentford may be forced to consider selling.
