Sky Sports: Newcastle handed striker ultimatum as Yoane Wissa threatens Brentford
When the final whistle blew against Everton in the last game of the season, despite defeat on the day, Newcastle United fans everywhere were rejoicing about the summer ahead.
Having won a trophy just two months prior, qualified for the Champions League, and in the healthiest financial position we’ve been in for years, hopes were high for a truly transformative window.
Instead, it’s been nothing short of a calamity. With big name missed after big name missed, the icing on the cake looked to have came when Alexander Isak communicated to the higher-ups his desire to leave.
We may not only have to replace Isak, but sign two strikers to also make up for Callum Wilson's loss, but our efforts to sign Yoane Wissa have become complicated.
Brentford's message to Newcastle
According to Sky Sports' Keith Downie, Brentford have told Newcastle to up their offer 'significantly' for Yoane Wissa or walk away.
He reports that Newcastle have had a £25m bid rejected and were willing to up that offer to £35m, knowing Wissa is eager to sign and would have no issue agreeing personal terms.
Sky report that Wissa 'only wants Newcastle', despite interest from Spurs and Forest, making Brentford's tough stance a big source of frustration for the 28-year-old and his representatives.
Downie adds that Wissa has 'told Brentford he doesn’t intend to return to training' as a direct result of them potentially pricing him out of a move, suggesting player power could still be key here.
Wissa feels ‘pact broken’ over dream Newcastle move
Elsewhere, talkSPORT's Ben Jacobs reports that Wissa feels betrayed by his current side over how events have unfolded.
Writing on X, Jacobs states that the player had a verbal pact with Brentford to allow a £26m exit in the wake of Ivan Toney’s departure for the Saudi Pro League.
And now Brentford have reneged on this agreement, Wissa is potentially threatening to not turn up for pre-season training as his hopes of playing in the Champions League may have been permanently dashed.
In what’s becoming another ugly situation and very public saga, we will wait to see if player power has a big impact here on Brentford's tough selling stance.
