Two new PIF appointments close as Howe urges Newcastle to land top candidates

As domestic cup winners and Champions League qualifiers, the appeal of joining Newcastle United should’ve been at an all time high this summer.

But concerns off the pitch have hindered us in ways we couldn’t have possibly imagined back in early May.

A lack of clear organisation and vision from those above and around Eddie Howe has damaged how many players, including our very own Alexander Isak, who has begun to question the project, it seems.

Thankfully, much to Howe’s relief, the pending appointments of a new sporting director and chief executive officer should get things back in order, with David Hopkinson (CEO) and Ross Wilson (Sporting Director) expected to arrive soon after PIF sign off.

Howe backs pair of appointments

Before the season ended back in May, Eddie Howe urged the club to act quickly.

However, having seen the speed in which we’ve actually proceeded with key moves on and off the pitch, the gaffer insists that the right people must arrive to replace Paul Mitchell and Darren Eales:

“It’s really important we fill those positions as quickly as possible, but also with the best people possible,”

“Again, I would probably urge the club to make the right decision over speed, because the long term is the most important for Newcastle.”

For Wilson (Nottingham Forest) and Hopkinson (ex-Real Madrid), it’s the former who Howe may be particularly pleased to bring in.

Having been involved in the recruitment process, Howe and Wilson are reportedly on great terms with one another as individuals.

Compared to the frosty relationship Howe had with the previous sporting director Paul Mitchell, and simply having everyone singing off the same hymn sheet would be a great start to Wilson’s tenure.

Club relationships in need of a boost?

According to The Mail’s Craig Hope, the looming arrivals of Wilson and Hopkinson should be confirmed soon.

As it seems that the relationships between the players and the club itself have gotten ‘weaker’ this season, and the pair may need to get right to work in mending bridges inside the club.

Hope writes that during the week leading up to the Carabao Cup final “players were surprised when none of the hierarchy came to see them at the training ground.”

Given what we now know about Alexander Isak, who reportedly felt insulted by his treatment by the likes of Paul Mitchell and his wage increase debacle, the club desperately needs to quash any idea of an ‘us and them’ the players may develop if things continue as they are.

The lack of leaders and considerable authority has probably come at the worst time possible for us, but the new CEO and sporting director, coupled with Howe remaining in place, should be able to steer the ship back in direction ahead of the biggest campaign in years.
