Sky Sports: Newcastle now in four-club battle to sign £55m Nicolas Jackson

The topic of potentially signing Nicolas Jackson is one that has divided the entire Newcastle United fanbase.

With Alexander Isak looking increasingly likely to have already kicked his final ball for the club, there’s very, very few forwards on the planet who could be a suitable replacement.

And the Chelsea forward has emerged as a serious contender to replace the Swede, as we look increasingly certain to play Anthony Gordon or Will Osula up top against Aston Villa on the opening weekend.

But Jackson could very well be just the next player who we face a tough battle to sign, with Sky Sports now revealing three European giants also in the race…

Toon battling Bayern and two others for Jackson?

According to Sky Sports Germany’s Florian Plettenberg, Bayern Munich have now entered the race to sign Nicolas Jackson this summer.

Despite having Harry Kane already on their books, and being linked with the highly-rated Nick Woltemade, the Bavarian giants have reportedly made enquiries in the past few hours.

They aren’t the only European giant in the mix, however, as Sky Sports also report that Serie A duo AC Milan and Juventus have also contacted Chelsea to find out the ‘conditions of a deal.’

Interestingly, the fee for Jackson looks to differ depending on the report. Where The Mail said Chelsea value Jackson above the £75m and £79m that was paid for Benjamin Sesko and Hugo Ekitike, Plettenberg claims that Jackson is ‘only’ valued at around £55m.

Though this could very well be the case of Chelsea charging the likes of ourselves and Manchester United a domestic premium price, where they would be far more willing to sell abroad for cheaper so they wouldn’t be strengthening a Premier League rival in the process.

Woltemade window now open?

On the surface, this news probably comes as no surprise to Newcastle fans: we’ve seen big clubs swoop in on almost all of our targets this summer.

But the fact it’s Bayern Munich coming in for Jackson could be a sign that Vincent Kompany’s champions may be edging away from a move for Woltemade.

The star of the U-21 EUROs, Woltemade recorded 12 goals in the Bundesliga last season, one less than Sesko, and has already been called up to the German National Team by Julian Nagelsmann.

As far as statement signings go, signing arguably the best striker under 21-years-old in Europe right now would be the boost our window so desperately needed.

But it gets complicated: Stuttgart are reportedly less willing to sell to Bayern and are asking for €10m more than what they’re offering, but the striker has already agreed personal terms with the former European champions.

So this will be a very interesting one to see unfold, particularly if Eddie Howe pushes for the cheaper, younger option in Woltemade, or the more expensive but experienced Jackson

  1. Utter madness,, £80 to £100 mil he’s absolute dynamite,, if we sign him and loose Isak for only £10 mil more , what is the point of watching football, it’s ridiculous, he will be on the wage £200k per week, why not give Isak £250 k ,,, those in charge at Newcastle need to have a good look at themselves, I love Eddie Howe but what has his nephew done? And Darren Eales has been terrible for the club, he’s the one who pushed for a new stadium of capacity of 65k which is nowhere near enough, who had he actually been in charge of before he arrived at Newcastle? He forced Amanda Staveley out and since she left the club has been in turmoil.

The way things are going £65k will be more than enough, PIF need to eat some humble pie and bring Amanda back.

  3. Can’t see Chelsea getting north of 60millon for Jackson, thou I still believe there is a striker in there and Howe could get it out of him. What us fan’s have to realise we can’t replace Isak like for like hopefully we get 2 striker’s in and they can make the number’s up.

  4. Please no.

He isn’t good enough to replace Isak, not prolific enough for us and no way we should be paying an inflated fee to help a rival who gazumped us on 2 cf signings by taking their rejects..

  5. Jackson for 55-60 isn’t terrible. Nobody is playing 80m or more, that’s just Chelsea trying it on. People frothing that Newcastle will pay that are winding themselves up – we absolutely won’t. Strand Larsen or Jackson at that type of cost aren’t inspiring, but they are PL level players. We may be at the point now that is what we have to do, if Isak isn’t salvageable. Ramos has gone quiet which is good, not strong \ quick enough for PL. Not sure if Samu at Porto has been looked at – just turned 21, big, quick, powerful. Portuguese teams always get big £ in negotiations but I think Howe could really develop him at say 60-65m??

Samu at Porto has a very complicated ownership structure- we’d never get a deal done on that in 3 weeks. And Porto paid a big fee so will be looking for a substantial deal. Release clause is €100m

  7. Given Newcastle have held no talks nor made a bid the fake media already have us in a “battle” with four other clubs and assisting the Newcastle are failing narrative !! As jasper points out they can’t even get the fee chelsea are demanding right .. the BBC have him at £48 million so you have 3 stories to choose from 🙈

  8. Can’t we offer Ishak a salary of 250-300K, It is much cheaper to pay him the salaries than to buy another top class striker.

Offer him twice as much as any other player? Really? You don’t see any potential problem with that?

  10. Have PIF read the 1998 competitions act.
Perhaps they will see the big 6 are at an unfair advantage as the voting that took place with Master’s and the Premier League to stifle us is illegal.

Porto have bought out most of Athletico’s rights this yr, they can buy the rest next or give them a portion of the fee. That may mean its better for them to sell next summer obviously, but if there’s a big offer now it may be worth their while rather than gambling on another good season / interest from top clubs then. Its widely touted they would listen to offers around e70m. Villa enquired in case they lost watkins
