Eddie Howe sets the record straight on Anthony Elanga
Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe has come out to defend summer signing Anthony Elanga.
There is an online trend among some football fans, where if a new transferred player plays seven games without registering a goal or assist, they become '007' (0 goals, 0 assists, 7 games). Unfortunately, not for a lack of trying, the Swedish international has hit this unwanted milestone.
Quizzed on Elanga’s form by the Daily Mail’s Craig Hope during Friday’s press conference, Howe said:
"It’s harsh to say he’s got no goals or assists. Statistically, that is right. But you look at the chances he has created, and sometimes it’s not on him that players he has served haven’t scored.
”I always think that is a tough one. If Nick scores Jacob Murphy's cross with the header, he gets the assist. Vice versa, if someone misses an opportunity, that assist doesn’t happen."
"He has done his job several times, but it hasn’t ended up in a goal. I have been really pleased with his general contribution and he’s looked a threat. You see what strengths he will bring.
”He has that raw pace and power that is so difficult to defend against. But I think he can get better and improve and we can help him do that as we continue to work with him."
Personally speaking, I agree with Eddie. Anthony Elanga was electric against Barcelona. He created two big chances, but both were wasted. Gordon and Barnes should have finished their chances, seeing Elanga miss out on what would’ve been two very good assists.
The Swede should’ve done better from a few promising positions in Wednesday’s 4-1 win over Bradford, but it feels far too early to be panicking about his lack of goals or assists as he acclimatises to a new team and style.
Elanga will be looking to make a difference for Newcastle in the upcoming game to second place Arsenal. In recent seasons, Newcastle have had Arsenal's number. But armed with an inconsistent attack, will they be able to break Arteta's mean back line?
