Elanga starts and Burn at LB – Confirmed Newcastle team vs Union Saint-Gilloise

The team sheets are in at the Lotto Park Stadium, which will host tonight’s Champions League clash between Union SG and Newcastle United.

Union SG won their opening game 3-1 at PSV and are currently top of the Belgian league, while Newcastle are looking to get their first points of the league phase after losing 2-1 to Barcelona two weeks ago.

Here is how the two sides line up, starting with Eddie Howe’s Newcastle XI:

Confirmed teams

Newcastle XI: Pope – Trippier, Thiaw, Botman, Burn – Guimaraes, Tonali, Joelinton – Elanga, Woltemade, Gordon

Subs: Ramsdale, Thompson, Hall, Schar, Barnes, Krafth, Osula, J. Murphy, Willock, A.Murphy, Miley

Dan Burn starts at left-back, Kieran Trippier returns to the side and Anthony Elanga comes in on the right wing, with Jacob Murphy dropping to the bench.

At the back, Tino Livramento misses out as he faces 6-8 weeks on the sidelines, and Lewis Hall is back on the bench, with Malick Thiaw and Sven Botman keeping their place at centre-back.

The midfield three remains unchanged, Anthony Gordon keeps his place down the left and Nick Woltemade is up top for his first Champions League start.

Union SG XI: Scherpen, Mac Allister, Burgess, Leysen, Khalaili, Zorgane, Van de Perre, Niang, Ait El Hadj, David, Kevin Rodríguez.

A massive game in the context our season and a big chance to kickstart our European campaign.

Howay the lads!

  1. Insisting on not playing Hall on the left makes me lose more faith in this manager. Our flanks lacks offensive play and also when Burns plays left back he tends to fall into the middle to much allowing the players to go one on one or make s cross. I love the dude but he should stay in the middle where we need him

  2. I find it very hard to believe the posters who want rid of Eddie are normal, fully sighted, NUFC fans. I always thought Eddie was a good manager, but I’ve changed my opinion. Eddie is a GREAT manager and, given normal luck, may well become an ALL-TIME GREAT.
