As part of Newcastle United’s summer rebuild, we’re expecting to see some young prospects coming through the door.
While there are several first-team positions that desperately need a refresh or reinforcement, the overall squad needs depth, desperately.
We can sign in the four ‘essential’ positions this summer, goalkeeper, right-back, midfielder and centre-forward, but we still need to add depth up and down the park.
One of the best ways to do that would be to sign inexpensive young players with plenty of potential to pad out the squad.
Newcastle monitoring Diego Aguado
Newcastle have their eyes on Real Madrid youngster Diego Aguado, according to AS.
The 19-year-old, who plays as either a centre-back or left-back, is thought to be a player who could leave the Bernabeu in the summer.
Several big clubs are monitoring the teenager, and AS reports that Borussia Dortmund already made a €6 million (£5 million) bid last year, but he decided to stick with Madrid.
There’s a feeling that he could leave this summer, however, and Newcastle, along with Parma and AC Milan, could be keen to make their move.
Aguado has only made one appearance in La Liga for Madrid, which was a 29-minute outing against Elche last month.
This one doesn’t feel like a first-team signing
We like the idea of padding out our squad with inexpensive youngsters, but we need ones who are first-team ready if that’s the plan, and we’re not sure Aguado sounds like he is.
He has the feel of a player who would need to spend time in the Under 21s before he could be trusted in the Premier League, and for that reason alone, we’re not fully sure about this one.
It feels as though we have bigger priorities this summer, in that we need a squad of players who don’t make us shudder when we see their names on the teamsheet when we have a few injuries to contend with.
If Aguado is being signed as one for the future, then okay, but not for the first team just yet.
