Nick Woltemade targeted by Bundesliga giants for summer switch - report
Newcastle United broke their transfer record last summer to bring Nick Woltemade to the Premier League.
The Magpies paid £65 million for Nick Woltemade, rising to £69 million with add-ons, becoming the club's most expensive signing.
Initially, it looked like a good move by Newcastle. The 6'6" German striker arrived in stunning form, and that carried over into his first few outings for his new club before his form faded.
The goals dried up, and Woltemade cut a lonely figure on the pitch as the team struggled to integrate him into their style of play. This ultimately forced Eddie Howe into a drastic rethink, asking the forward to drop back into midfield.
Borussia Dortmund are monitoring Nick Woltemade
As the uncertainty over his suitability to be a success at Newcastle continues, so too does speculation on his future, and it seems that Bundesliga clubs are paying close attention.
According to Bild (via Bulinews), Borussia Dortmund have the German international on their list of candidates to replace goal machine Sehrou Guirassy, who is expected to leave at the end of the season.
The report claims that Woltemade has no intention of leaving Newcastle in the summer, but that things could still change between now and then. It also claims that a permanent transfer would be out of Dortmund's reach, so a loan move could be proposed, which sounds like a total non starter to us.
We haven't seen the best of Nick Woltemade by a long way
We'd be absolutely astonished if Newcastle were willing to sanction a loan move for one of its top players. A permanent transfer seemed unlikely enough, but when the report suggested a loan move, the whole thing fell apart.
There are still seven games left of the season, and with a bit of actual work on the training ground, we may now start to see another side of Woltemade's game.
If not, we're convinced we will see more from him next season when Eddie Howe has had a full pre-season to work with him. There's still a lot more to come from the 24-year-old and we back Eddie Howe to get that out of him.
