Kevin Keegan doesn’t think Pardew will get to spend Carroll cash.

I’ve managed to ‘borrow’ some of Kevin Keegan’s interview with Gabby Logan on 5Live earlier this afternoon. I understand that those who happen to not be in the UK have trouble accessing the online BBC features, so I’ve been naughty, nabbed it, and here it is for you all to listen to.



I’ve cut out the irrelevant bits as the interview is about twelve minutes long in it’s entirety and the first ten minutes is spent talking about generic football issues and Keegan’s experiences at other clubs before he moved on to talking about Newcastle.

The general feeling is that Kevin Keegan doesn’t believe that Alan Pardew will see any money from the sale of Andy Carroll to Liverpool on transfer deadline day. Keegan is legend at this club and his opinion is one that is always welcome of course, but is he right on this?

That debate will continue until the summer no doubt and the proof will be in what business the club does before the start of next season. It is a case of sour grapes and bitterness from Keegan though? Or is he about bang on the money?

Time will tell I guess, but what do you think?

  1. Dave @ 73 – I concur. It boils my **** when people are ignorant to history and actual facts from the people who were there and went through it at time. I’m taking solace from the fact that most people know what I am on about.

  6. As I have said, I love Keegan to pieces but I just don’t think he is doing the club any good with comments like that. He maybe thinks he is signing from the same hymn sheet as the fans and is a fan himself which is fair enough….but comments like this only cause even more unrest to the players.

    Imagine Pards in the dressing room assuring the players (in a room full of Geordies and Scousers) that he can spend money then a Newcastle (and Liverpool) idol is telling the press that Pards will get no money….for me it just makes it more difficult for us to keep morale up and players will become more unsettled.
    We all sympathise with Keegan, we all love him, he doesnt need to lay it on thick, we know how badly he was treated and anyone else wouldnt have come up smelling of roses after suing the club so for me the comments were at a poor time in the clubs season and could have easily not been said to the benefit of everyone. The only person he is attacking is Ashley but you throw a stone in the pond and the ripples affect everything around it.

  12. Moreno maybe that will make the Fat Man even more determined to prove KK wrong.
    But what is he to do when he is asked a question in an interview ? he has always been the same he says what he thinks you cant expect him to decline an interview just incase he causes a bit of ****.
    If someone dosn’t sign because of what KK says then I dont think they are the right players for the club 😉

  16. true Dave, wouldnt want to give the fickle millionairres any incentive not too though!

    My point is, as it originally was, that I just don’t think it helps the club in any way shape or form by coming out and saying things like that, it may be his opinion and its a fair enough opinion but at the same time it’s inconveniently timed.
    And if the fat man changes his entire plans based on a Keegan comment I would also be suprised….not that we’ll ever know that of course

  19. DJG – Maybe not, but they were an established league side and had been for years. Their support would have been much bigger than what ut was currently. All it takes to confirm that is a quick look at the history books…

  21. Toonsy, if you are saying people should go by those who were there and have the facts – shouldn’t we all be listening to everything Keegan has to say, you know, since he managed under Ashley and made Ashley’s team admit they lied constantly?

    Seems a bit contradictory to say he shouldn’t say anything and may not be right, doesn’t it?

  22. Moreno, KK seems to be the only one who comes out and has a go at MA. I thought MA had everyone quaking in there shoes, but not little Keggy, he piles right in there. To be honest I don’t think his opinion is worth jack, and doesn’t worry MA or the club in the slightest. He can only do his own faded reputation harm…

    Now the KK from the first time round, that’s a different matter, he was and will remain a legend for what he did for the club, and rightly so.

  33. Dave, I am just in a mood about it as there is too many elements of truth and it could be a realistic possibility so I am trying to convince meself KK is wrong and we will spend 🙂

    One thing which hasnt been thought of….if we hadnt sold Carroll and hadn’t recieved 35 million….how much was Ashley planning to spend this summer?
    10-15 million?
    He will probably have not changed any of his plans or will give Pards any more spends than they agreed when Pards signed contract. The 35 million will go into the pocket, he will spend the 15 million he always planned to and people will all believe that 15 million was out of the 35 million chunk. Yes ok, I am maybe over analysing it a little bit and I may be basing this on absolutely no facts or evidence whatsoever, but I reckon people havent really considered the fact that he was going to have to spend money in the summer anyway!

  36. I think at the end of the day, the Carroll sale has taken a year off the time Ashley will stay. We would have had to survive a season in the Premiership without being relegated to have earned that through TV money, etc. so if we stay up this season (we should) and along with the Carroll sale, we have taken a year off his time here.

    If he ever wants to sell, that is.
