5 key battles between Newcastle and QPR tonight

With the games coming thick and fast over the next few weeks, Rafa’s rotation policy will be in full force for tonight’s match against QPR. This makes it difficult to pin down exactly who will be trusted with increasing the gap between the two teams but, if picked, here are the five individual battles that could determine who gets the three points.

Isaac Hayden Signing St James Park Close UpChery v Hayden

Tjaronn Chery doesn’t play as an out and out striker, but the attacking midfielder is still his side’s top scorer so far in the Championship. This means it’ll fall to one of our defensive midfielders – most likely to be Hayden given his omission at the weekend – to keep tabs on the Dutchman.

All of Chery’s goals have come from set pieces (three penalties and one free-kick), so keeping him quiet will involve not conceding fouls in and around the penalty area. In fact, all of QPR’s nine goals this season have come from set pieces, so trying not to dive in and give them a chance to go to ground in general makes most sense if we want to continue our run of clean sheets.

  1. Are we now the dominant side in the division? I seem to remember some doubters on here after the first few matches. 😆

  6. Are we so sure we couldn’t at least survive in the Prem with the team we have? I’m not so sure. We would be in the bottom half but if we can bring in 3 or 4 top players next summer Rafa will really give it a go!!!

  7. Wolves 0 Barnsley 3, that’s them softened up for the weekend…

Pity we can’t get more than 52,000 in at the cathedral on the hill 🙂

  11. Well done lads.

Squad depth is so huge in this league and no one can match us in that regard. Being able to send out fresh legs like Ayoze, Mitro and the subs makes all the difference

  12. kimtoon: 5live said 15 on target in the first half alone Sharpy !

Kim – that means our away fans saw an attempt over 3 mins or so ?
You can live with a Tuesday night trip to the big smoke for that return I reckon.

  13. I know nobody really cares but it’s another clean sheet for our young defenders & new keeper – great for their confidence

  14. As long as we keep playing well I think Rafa will be happy. We don’t always have to run the score up. A few 2-0 wins in a row will be quite acceptable now….. 😆

  15. Absolutely over the moon with team performance and how many of our players are really coming along now. Shelvey, Perez, the defense as a whole, the keeper Sels. It’s brilliant.

G2 – I think after tonight we will find a lot of clubs now setting up differently against us.
No way will we be coming at with scores like that week in, week out – but no reason why we shouldn’t be performing like that every week.

  17. Spot on Sharpy. We must stay sharp to keep winning as I’m sure Rafa will emphasize. He doesn’t take anything for granted. Look how he spoke about QPR before the match. Always respect the opposition but then go out and pound them if you can!!!

  18. Well, I don’t suppose many expected that?!

Think that’s called sending a statement out to the league. Wolves next and they’re on the back of a 4-0 walloping at home! Money on Mitro and Shelvey both to the “rested”

  24. That Jimmy-Floyd name has always puzzled me though. It’s a bit like being called Sammy-Nigel. Do they really go together well? Jimmy and Floyd I mean?

  25. Shelvey was immense tonight like.

id love to see his stats coz he seemed to be everywhere & linking every pass from one to another – that’s the Shelvey I was excited about us buying!!!.

  26. Anybody still scorning my suggestion we would walk it once we clicked? I’m happy to report the clicking process is now complete, so strap yourselves in as we make this league our b?tch. We won’t match Hoots’ points tally imo, but nobody will finish close to us imo.

I’m not going to get carried away, we’re still a win and a draw away from 10th position, huge games to play and a long way to go but it does look promising

  29. a little tactic last night,Shelvey came out to Richie for a short corner Richie sent him back but Rafa told him to go short as he was pulling a defender out of the box less bodys in the box too this is while the game is going on,doesnt miss a trick Rafa

Yep, commentators picked up on that too Ice, very pleasing to hear and we were well winning at that point too but still Rafa is on it.

  31. KIM we have a manager now that knows what its all about mate,Wolves will be a worrying a little exspect Rafa to keep their feet on the ground as Wolves will try and park the bus i think we will need pace to break them down

  32. Ice, I can see a lot of teams putting 10 behind the ball now after that, I’ll take a stack of 1.0 wins any time so long as we go up.

spot on mate ill go with that,Rafa main job now is to keep all the players happy we want no sulking from anyone

  34. Shelvey, Ritchie, Perez, Mitro. Unstoppable in this league. Mbemba for Clark and Diame for Gouffran and that’s our best team. Mind you knowing Rafa we’ll only see it about twice this season.

  35. Great result last night.

Isn’t it refreshing to be talking about equalling positive records rather than the negative ones we’ve managed to equal or make worse over the last few years

  36. We’re just rounding into form now. A lot of goals in the side. I’m surprised by Shelvey. He is now back in form and scoring for fun. If we get Mitro and Perez scoring regularly we will get goals from the midfield as well. We scored 90 last time in this division. I think we can break that.
