Newcastle join the race for Southampton striker

The Daily Mail report that Newcastle United have joined West Brom in the race to sign Southampton striker Jay Rodriguez this summer.

The 27 year-old striker, who has two years left on his current contract, is said to have grown frustrated by his lack of first team opportunities with the Saints and is keen on a summer move to re-ignite his career.

The versatile attacker has started just 8 Premier League games for Claude Puel’s side this season, scoring 4 goals in the process.

If Newcastle could keep Rodriguez fit, he is a player who could return to his best with a move to St. James’ Park. Injuries and a lack of first team opportunities have seen his progress stall, but he has undoubted talent.

Scoring 17 goals in Southampton’s 2013/14 season, he’s proven his capability at Premier League level, however questions have been cast over his fitness than his talent.

Should the fee be reasonable, Rodriguez may be a player worth taking a risk on. He has invaluable Premier League experience, can play up top or out wide and has the potential to regain his best form under the guidance of Rafa Benitez.
