Rafa Benitez looks set to be dealt yet another blow in the transfer market as top goalkeeping target Pepe Reina looks set to sign a new deal at Napoli according to reports in Italy.
This one has become a bit of a drawn out transfer saga, with suggestions that Reina is set to sign a contract extension one minute, then counter-claims that he will be sold the next.
One thing that is for certain, however, is Benitez’s interest. Rafa is clearly a big fan of the 34-year-old stopper, having signed him during his time at Liverpool and Napoli. It was widely understood that Reina was his number one goalkeeping target this summer.
Newcastle may have several goalkeepers on their books (Krul, Elliot, Darlow, Sels and Woodman), but I believe Reina would’ve been a worthwhile addition, not only adding real quality and experience on the pitch, but some much needed character and leadership in the dressing room.
