Southgate to give newly promoted midfielder England call-up ahead of Jonjo Shelvey? – Report

According to The Sun, Gareth Southgate is now considering giving Fulham’s Tom Cairney an England call-up – with the midfielder eligible to play for the Three Lions after only playing in friendlies for Scotland.

With England lacking creativity and forward thinking players in the middle of the park, many have quite rightfully urged Southgate to give Jonjo Shelvey a chance – however it seems he may be preferring Fulham skipper Tom Cairney.

Here’s a snippet from the story today, suggesting that Southgate is now ‘looking at all avenues’ after complaining about the ‘decreasing pool of available Premier League players’:

“GARETH SOUTHGATE is tracking Fulham midfielder Tom Cairney – even though he has played for Scotland.

“The England manager is looking at a number of players who are eligible for the Three Lions, including West Ham’s Irish star Declan Rice.

“Nottingham-born Cairney, 27, has a Scottish father and English mother so is eligible to play for both countries.

“Even though he has played twice for Scotland, they were friendlies against Canada and Costa Rica.

“Southgate has complained about the decreasing pool of available Premier League players and is looking at all avenues.”

That last line must be pretty infuriating if you’re Jonjo.

Cairney is a good player and one Rafa Benitez clearly rates (with it being well documented that we tried to sign last year), but it would be another massive kick in the teeth for Shelvey if Southgate overlooked him once again.
