Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp has spoke highly of Sean Longstaff – believing his upward stance, forward passing and ability with both feet reminds him of ex-Man Utd star Michael Carrick.
Longstaff has certainly impressed in the last few weeks, after winning a place in the side due to the ongoing injuries of both Jonjo Shelvey and Mo Diame. He delivered another assured performance at Wembley last week and has done well, especially considering he has played against the likes of Manchester City, Chelsea and Tottenham already.
Here’s what Redknapp said when speaking about the youngster before Saturday’s game at Wembley:
Newcastle have received a real boost with unearthing Longstaff, who has grabbed his opportunity with both hands. As Ki and others come back, it will be interesting to see if Rafa Benitez keeps faith in the youngster, who is fast becoming a fan favourite.
It is always good seeing local players come into the first team from the academy and it is something we have seen very little of during the Ashley era. A major reason for the impasse between manager and owner has been the lack of investment in the academy; let’s hope the progress of Longstaff will show Ashley et al the benefits more investment would bring.
On the pitch we face a big game at in form Wolves on Monday night and on current form, it is hard to leave Longstaff out, regardless of the fitness of others.
Sean’s done outstandingly well since taking his chance in the 1st team.
Personally I’d keep him in the team for wolves and leave Diame on the bench.
I always rated Carrick very highly and can see where Jamie’s coming from with his comparison.
The great thing is he’s so young and can only improve.
Great times ahead for the lad…and the toon hopefully

Frank Lampard not Carrick, Lamps twice the player Carrick is, if Longstaff keeps his head and continues the way he is going, not be long till Soujthgates is sniffing, and he can be that good

Being a lifelong supporter from seeing my first game in 1949, I think Longstaff is like Ivor Alchurch – tall, upright and silky smooth. Any other old timers agree?

I was thinking he plays more like Gerrard? If he gets the timings of those late runs into the ball just outside the box, then the comparison will be complete for me! I like the look of him and Hayden together in the engine room, they seem to work well together and spark off one another.
