According to CalcioMercato, AC Milan are eyeing a cut-price deal to sign Newcastle United centre-back Federico Fernandez this summer.
AC’s new boss Marco Giampaolo has already been linked with a move for Fabian Schar earlier this month, however it sounds like they may be forced to look at ‘cheaper’ alternatives due to some ongoing financial issues at the club.
As a result, Italian outlet CalcioMercato claim that they could now make a move for Fernandez – a player they believe could be available at a cut-price fee given his current contract at Newcastle expires next summer.
Fernandez was a clear Rafa Benitez signing. The Spaniard had worked with the ex-Swansea centre-back during his time at Napoli, and it was reported at the time that he had a real job convincing Mike Ashley to sign the 30-year-old.
Considering Rafa’s now gone, he’s entering the final year of his contract and he turns 31 next year, it would not surprise me if we cashed in – not forgetting the fact a move to Milan may appeal to Fernandez, a player who is probably our 4th choice centre-back behind Schar, Lejeune and Lascelles.
There might be absolutely nothing in this latest rumour from Italy, but it’s fair to say this will be his last season at Newcastle United whatever happens , with no one in their 30’s likely to get a new deal at Mike Ashley’s NUFC.
