According to the Grimsby Telegraph, Newcastle United are now eyeing Scunthorpe talent John McAtee.
The Lincolnshire-based paper claim that ‘multiple sources’ have confirmed our interest in the 20-year-old – who recently broken into Scunthorpe’s first-team after shining at U-23 level.
Interestingly, the Chronicle report that we first became aware of the striker when he ‘impressed’ NUFC scouts during a 3-3 draw with our U-23’s in November.
The 6ft’ striker broke into the Iron’s first-team on New Year’s Day, and has continued to impress despite the step up from U-23 level to firs- football in League Two.
In 10 appearances he’s bagged 2 goals and 2 assists, scoring in a 1-0 win over Cheltenham Town over the weekend – a game Newcastle scouts travelled to watch him in according to The Chronicle.
He signed a one-year deal from Shrewsbury just last summer, however the League Two club are expected to extend his current deal to stop him from leaving on a free in a few months time.
After links to Turkish talent Efe Binici this week, it looks like McAtee is the latest youngster we’re looking to add to our U-23 ranks.
