Newcastle United join the race to sign £9m-rated Senegal star – L’Equipe

Accoidng to reports in France, Newcastle United are showing interest in Senegalese wonderkid Pape Sarr.

This comes from L’Equipe, who claim that we are one of several Premier League sides who’ve joined the race to sign the 18-year-old who has just enjoyed an impressive breakthrough season in France.

The box-to-box midfielder bagged four goals in 25 appearances for the Ligue 1 side and helped them end the season up in 10th – also receiving a couple of call-ups to the Senegalese national side as a result of his impressive displays.

This isn’t actually the first time we’ve been linked with a move for £9m-rated Sarr, with the same French outlet reporting back in April that we were keeping tabs on him and Metz teammate Boubakar Kouyate.

Here’s what Sarr told L’Equipe – who claim that ourselves, Aston Villa and Everton are keen – when asked about his future ahead of the upcoming 2021/22 season:

“At FC Metz, our first objective is to keep the team in Ligue 1.

“But winning trophies with them is also part of my ambitions for next season.

“I want to have a better season than in the 2020/21 [campaign] and if possible, score more goals.”

Metz are believed to be eager to keep a hold of their star midfielder, however they’re expected to reluctantly cash in if a substantial bid arrives this summer, with many Ligue 1 sides struggling financially following the global pandemic.
