Howe responds to sporting director rumours after report claims they met last week in Liverpool

Eddie Howe responded to links with Liverpool’s director of football Michael Edwards during his first press conference at St James’ Park.

The 43-year-old admitted he’s someone he has huge respect for, praising the work he’s done at Anfield, but played down talk of him heading to Tyneside.

The new worst-kept secret in football is that our ambitious owners are on the hunt for a top sporting director to help kickstart the Saudi-led revolution on Tyneside, with the current Liverpool chief rumoured to be on a shortlist alongside ex-Chelsea supremo Michael Emenalo.

It was confirmed on Wednesday that Edwards is set to leave his post on Merseyside at the end of the current season and will be replaced by Julian Ward.

Howe, a known friend of Edwards, reportedly linked up with him on Merseyside to watch Liverpool’s 2-0 win against Atletico Madrid a week ago, and claims that he “knows nothing” about talk of us hiring his mate as director of football.

Watch what he had to say when asked about Edwards’ future:

I’m no body language expert, but I’m left wondering if Howe’s wry smile while responding to the question means anything.

Does he know more than we are led to believe?
