Matt Targett makes brilliant NUFC admission & reveals dream he won’t let go after £12m move

Matt Targett has revealed that the Newcastle United dressing room is the best he’s played in, also sharing his goals for the 2022/23 season and beyond.

After putting pen to paper over a £12m permanent move earlier this week, the left-back told NUFC TV that this is the “best dressing room I’ve been in”, praising the number of leaders in the group and amount of people who made him feel welcome following his arrival in January.

The 26-year-old is also refusing to let go of his England dream, believing he can improve as a player under Eddie Howe and secure the call-up he was “close” to receiving after being named Aston Villa’s player of the season for 2020/21.

He’s also named a top 10 finish as the short-term goal at club level, feeling we should look to emulate the likes of West Ham and Leicester and push for a place in Europe over the “next few season.”

Here’s what he had to say on both, starting with his comments on his Toon teammates…

Targett on the Newcastle United dressing room:

“It’s probably the best dressing room I’ve been in, in terms of players making you feel welcome, in terms of how many players are leaders in that dressing room.

“It’s a great bunch of lads.”

Targett on his goals for the next four years:

“I think we can try and get into Europe in the next few seasons, with a few good signings.

“You look at teams like West Ham, Wolves and Leicester. They are the teams we need to be aiming for this season to establish ourselves as a top half team and then kick on.

“I’m also not going to give up on internationals for England, so I think that will be the main target moving forward.

“The previous season (2020/21) I was close (to a call-up), so I want to kick on and improve as a player.

“I’m sure I can be an England international, for sure.”
