French media claim NUFC have reignited interest in prolific striker who could leave for £17m

Newcastle United have reignited their interest in Rennes striker Gaetan Laborde, as reported by French outlet Foot Mercato.

The 28-year-old is an experienced forward who bagged an impressive 20 goals and eight assists in all competitions for both Montpellier and Rennes last season, scoring five goals in seven appearances in the Europa Conference League.

Newcastle, along with Sevilla and Lille, have been monitoring the Frenchman for ‘several months’ and ‘could go on the offensive’, according to the report.

Foot Mercato claim that he could be available for around £17m, stating that we first showed interest in the striker back in December last year.

While it may seem an unambitious target to some fans given his age and history of clubs, he could be a far more viable option than some of the more expensive young stars we have been linked with. On the flip side, are we really going to sign another ageing striker when we already have Wood and Wilson?

Who knows, but with 38 goals and 17 assists to his name over the past two seasons, he may be seen as a cheap alternative who could bolster our front line for the next few seasons.
