Following VAR’s decision to disallow a perfectly good Newcastle during yesterday’s 0-0 draw with Crystal Palace, a frustrated Eddie Howe and Alan Shearer have both had their say, with the latter branding it a ‘pathetic decision’.
In the build up to the disallowed goal, Joe Willock was shoved in the back by Tyrick Mitchell, pushing him into Palace’s goalkeeper and resulting in what the referee viewed as a foul.
If not a goal, it should’ve actually been a foul on Willock, resulting in a Newcastle penalty and a chance to take the lead, but yet again VAR has highlighted the incompetence and low standard of referees in this country.
This is not the first incident we’ve had with VAR – Wilson’s disallowed goal against Brighton, Schar’s non-penalty against City, Longstaff’s shirt pulled against Wolves, Isak’s offside against Liverpool – and we’re only six games into the season.
After the game, Howe revealed that he believed it was a “perfectly good goal” and was left disappointed with the decision made by VAR referee Lee Mason.
On the incident, Howe said: “I disagree with the decision. I thought it should be a goal. I thought Joe was pushed. He is running in and is pushed into the keeper. I am not sure what Joe is supposed to do there. For me, it is a perfectly good goal or a penalty. I am baffled by the decision. It’s a poor one from the officials.”
On social media, Shearer said: “Willock clearly pushed into the keeper! Pathetic decision! So so bad. Hope I’ve calmed down by 10.25pm when the show starts!!”
See the incident below, followed by Shearer’s VAR rant on Match of the Day:

Agree it should be a goal, but it’s not a VAR decision (VAR doesn’t make decisions it advises the ref just like the linesmen and 4th official), it’s the ref’s decision therefore poor refereeing.
