EXCLUSIVE: Newcastle set to watch Croatian at World Cup as player switches to familiar agency

Newcastle United are showing interest in Stuttgart left-back Borna Sosa ahead of the World Cup.

We can exclusively reveal that club scouts will be in Qatar to watch the 24-year-old over the coming weeks, having been impressed by his performances in the Bundesliga this season.

The former Dinamo Zagreb star has started the campaign with eight assists in 13 appearances in all competitions and will be hoping to take that form into the World Cup, where Croatia face Belgium, Canada and Morocco in Group F.

Stuttgart’s financial situation could force them into a January sale, however, sporting director Sven Mislintat has recently urged the 6ft 1′ full-back to stay with the club until the remainder of the season, with German outlet Bild also suggesting a summer move may be more likely.

Interestingly, Sosa recently switched to representatives and joined ICM Stellar – the agency that looks after a host of Newcastle United players such as Nick Pope, Jonjo Shelvey, Elliot Anderson and Javier Manquillo.

Dan Burn has done a brilliant job in recent weeks and Matt Targett has rarely let us down, but neither possess the sort of attacking threat Eddie Howe may desire in the long run, meaning more forward-thinking left-backs are being considered.

As we revealed earlier this week, Luke Shaw is someone the club looked at before Targett’s arrival on a permanent deal, however, Manchester United’s ongoing reluctance to do business with Newcastle made that a non-starter.
