Club trigger €9m release clause – Newcastle beaten to another deal by a ‘big six’ rival?

It looks like Maximo Perrone is the latest young midfielder who will NOT be signing at St James’ Park next month, despite serious interest from Newcastle United.

As revealed by Fabrizio Romano late last night, Manchester City will trigger the Argentine’s €9m release clause (£6.6m) at Velez Sarsfield, with the player now expected to sign ‘soon’ at the Etihad if ‘all goes to plan.’

Just a few weeks ago, Vélez a Fondo – a radio show dedicated to Vélez Sarsfield – claimed that Velez director Christian Bassedas travelled to Newcastle last month to finalise a deal for the highly-rated midfielder.

However, it seems the 19-year-old – who is considered a ‘huge talent’ – will join Pep Guardiola’s side once he’s competed at the Sudamericano Sub20 for Argentina’s U20 side, suggesting Man City may have hijacked our approach.

With Andrey Santos arriving in London this week to complete a €12.5m move to Chelsea, Perrone is the second highly-rated South American who looks set to join a ‘big six’ rival after interest from Newcastle.

Let’s hope Dan Ashworth and Co. have another ace up their sleeves, with our need for another midfielder heightened following another long-term injury to Jonjo Shelvey.

  1. We are going to have to keep names of potential signings secret if we are to progress any of them @ all the other money bags clubs are snapping the. Up not because they want them but just to stop us signing them . None of these young players are going to get a look in at chelsea/ man citee et Al.
