Steve Stone is under consideration to become Newcastle United’s new Under-21s coach.
Following Elliot Dickman’s sudden departure last week – just 14 months on from his appointment – we’ve been informed that the 51-year-old is one of several names in the running to become the U21s Lead Player Development Coach.
Stone has previously worked alongside Alan Pardew and Steve McClaren at first-team level between 2010-2015, with his most recent role being at Burnley.
He became the manager of their Under-23 side in 2018 and was then promoted to work alongside Sean Dyche at senior level in 2021, but was dismissed when the Burnley boss was sacked in April last year.
The Gateshead-born winger was capped nine times by England and was a member of the squad that reached the semi-finals of Euro 96.
No decision has been made as of yet, however, the club is expected to announce the next phase of an Academy overhaul in the coming weeks.
Neil Winskill, the Academy’s Head of Coach Development, took training in the days following Dickman’s exit, while Neil Dawson – a first-team coach who has previously taken up several roles at Academy level – has overseen matters this week.
