Newcastle 1-0 Fulham: Toon leave it late as Alexander Isak punishes Mitrovic slip

You know what they say about good teams – they find a way to win even when playing well below their best!

That was true of Newcastle United today, who left it late to beat an organised Fulham side after a solid yet sloppy performance at St James’ Park.

Aleksandar Mitrovic had a chance to hand Fulham a second half lead from the spot, but it was Alexander Isak who came up trumps, heading home in the 89th minute to send the Gallowgate wild!

Late victories like this are also priceless, giving us another monumental boost at the end of a rollercoaster week on Tyneside. OK, we were way off our electric, high-intensity best, barely tested Leno and looked unlikely from set pieces, but it’s another huge three points where we restricted the visitors to zero shots on target.

The win sends us up to third – back above Manchester United – and just one point behind Manchester City in second. That’s also our SIXTH straight Premier League clean sheets and our seventh straight at SJP in all competitions, extending our unbeaten run in the Premier League to 14 games.

Joelinton kept his place in the side, despite his arrest in the early hours of Thursday morning for drink driving, leaving Allan Saint-Maximin on the bench alongside fit-again striker Alexander Isak as Howe went with the same 11 that beat Leicester in midweek.

The first half saw us continue the theme of spurning good chances at St James’ Park. We didn’t have a great deal of openings, as an in-form Fulham generally defended well, but there were a few big openings.

Bruno played a brilliant disguised pass to find Longstaff – who was making a couple of smart runs in the box – but his effort was blocked brilliantly. Wilson had a huge opportunity to make it 1-0 just before the break – his turn was superb to leave two Fulham defenders for dead, yet the finish was game and curled straight at Leno.

There were a few too many sloppy passes as we looked to build from the back. Trippier, Botman and Burn were all guilty of cheap giveaways, while Schar was arguably our best player in the opening 45, picking out some lovely passes and dealing with Mitrovic well.

The bad news was Bruno failed to shake off a twisted ankle picked up midway through the first 45, seeing him replaced by Allan Saint-Maximin at the break. It felt like a huge blow to lose the Brazilian, who looked visibly upset as he went down the tunnel.

We continued to look a few levels below our best – Trippier was having a rare off game and Wilson looked sluggish once again. Fabian Schar was the first to go close in the second half, smashing a free-kick off the post on the hour mark, but the biggest turning point of the game followed five minutes later.

Fulham wanted a penalty for Burn’s challenge on Andreas, but it was Trippier’s late swipe on Decordova-Reid that was shown to the referee before he changed his initial decision and pointed to the spot.

Mitrovic stepped up, scored and reeled away in celebration, only for the referee to disallow the Serbian’s strike as a slip just as he struck the ball meant he touched it twice before it hit the net!

A wave of energy, noise and optimism suddenly whipped around the stadium. It felt like we’d suddenly been given the lift we needed and a second chance to win a game that looked destined to end all square if we didn’t get going.

Isak came on immediately after, giving fans another reason to believe, although we continued to look unlikely in the final third, with Saint-Maximin’s firing just wide before the match-winning moment arrived.

After Wilson’s initial header was blocked following Longstaff’s teasing cross, our number nine latched onto the loose ball and put it on a plate for Isak, who headed into an empty net and celebrated his first goal at the Gallowgate!

Joelinton was a man mountain once again – he and Schar were the best players on the pitch, for me – while Longstaff put in a strong, under the radar display in midfield. Wilson continues to look off the pace and Trippier put in one of his poorer games for the club, but it’s a relief to see him and Schar avoid yellow cards that would’ve led to a one-game ban.

Bruno’s twisted ankle remains a big worry – he left the ground on crutches – and our performance was well below the standard set in recent months, however late wins like this can be priceless, seeing us beat an in-form Fulham side who’d won all of their last five games since the World Cup break.

Next up, a trip to Crystal Palace on Saturday, followed by our semi-final first leg at Southampton a week on Tuesday.

(4-3-3): Pope – Trippier, Schar, Botman, Burn – Longstaff, Guimaraes, Willock – Almiron, Wilson, Joelinton.

SUBS: Dubravka, Lascelles, Isak, Saint-Maximin, Ritchie, Lewis, Manquillo, Wood, Murphy.

  1. It looked a lot closer game than oit actually was. We had 20 shots with 5 on target. The had 4 shots with zero on target.

  2. If Newcastle weren’t at their fluent best that was at least in part down to a decent shift by Fulham

Plenty possession but wasteful finishing again kept it close but with the belief Howe has instilled, this side are just a joy to watch even when not at their best and schar was tip top today. Really enjoyed Isak’s game today too and he looks very sharp

It’s moot now but I thought it was a pen against trippier. sure the lad went down like he’d been shot but trippier caught him and 9/10 players would do the same.

  3. I thought Fulham worked us hard yesterday without really creating much themselves – other than the penalty obviously.
I agree with the general opinion that the Trippier incident wasn’t the penalty but the Burn one was – I also think that Burn should have been sent off so maybe it was better they gave the wrong one.

It was a similar story yesterday – lots of chances created but just couldn’t finish them off.

I thought the goal was excellent though. Well won back by Murphy, lovely ball to the back post by Longstaff & brilliant team play by Wilson.
Having missed a few chances (or had them saved if that’s fairer), some forwards might have tried to force that in despite the tight angle – and took the corner if that’s what came of it. But Wilson put the team and his teammate first and calmly played the ball back across on a plate for Isak.

On paper it looks like an obvious Newcastle win, but I think that takes away something from the players imo – the character of the team to battle for those 3 points.

    City (a)
    Fulham (a)
    City (h)

  5. A scrappy game with several players not at their best. Trips was never a penalty as he was fouled by the other player, however, agree that Burns was a pen. Swings and roundabouts… onwards and upwards

  6. Kim – me too. My thinking is if it was then he wouldn’t have been able to play on til half time.

I’ve heard some fans saying they shouldn’t have allowed him to play on, but they can’t wrap him in cotton wool & if he’s saying he’s ok 🤷🏼‍♂️.

It’s a tough one being so close to half time as well. Hopefully he’s ok.

  7. To follow on from that though.

I’ve been critical of Longstaff in recent weeks and want to balance it out a bit, because on reflection I may have been a bit harsh.

It’s his composure and finishing I’ve criticised him for only. I’ve never missed his work rate & effort he puts in for the team. I’ve also never said we should get rid of him, only replace him in the first team.

But I’m will to concede that maybe he’s being asked to do a job in the team that doesn’t come natural to him in that more advanced role.

When Bruno went off yesterday and Sean moved into the middle of the 3 and sat back a bit more he looked far more comfortable & played really well.

He reminded me a bit of Michael Carrick.

I still think he needs upgrading in the first team, I just think I’ve maybe seen his weaknesses as a midfielder because of the role he’s playing at the moment rather than his strengths in a midfield role that suits his game.

  8. I know there’s a number of names flying about for potential signings, but I player I still really like & could see fitting into this Howe side is Connor Gallagher from Chelsea.

They are obviously spending big at the moment & must be getting close to needing to sell to balance the books.

They may prefer not to sell to us – a direct rival (if that’s how they see us – they should).

He’s a better goal scorer than Longstaff imo with a similar work rate.

Maddison is a better finisher than Gallagher – but is his work rate up there with Longstaff and Gallagher.

Though I think we may find it difficult to bring any upgrades in before the summer.

  9. Twisted my ankle just like that once. I could barely walk and couldn’t walk properly for two weeks. It was 2 months before it was back to normal!
However Brunos doesn’t look that serious. Here’s hoping cos he’s our top man and we won’t be able to sign a replacement anywhere near as good.

  10. Liverpool, ManU, Spurs and Arsenal still have to come to SJP
Win those and we should manage top four.
We however, still have to go to City and Chelsea

Georgio: I have done the same thing but it is a funny story. I was in Boston at a work classroom. Next to the hotel was an Irish bar and a few of us agreed to meet there. It was 5pm and I was 1st there so I park myself at a good table. It was the day after St Patrick’s day and Boston is nuts for that. Anyway, I get up to get my first drink and my foot sticks to the floor and I fall over and roll my ankle. The F-ing idiots hadn’t cleaned up after all the booze spilled the night before.

I go back to the hotel to see what happens if I just put my feet up. I end up at the Emergency Room and get crutches and one of those boots. i think it took me about 2 weeks to fully recover and there werent any further problems.

I told my wife the story as she came to meet me 3 days later. I dont think she believed me 🙂

  13. Youri Tielamans was in the OPTA worst team of the weekend based on stats. He lost possession 20 (TWENTY) times. Is his head no longer in it or is he not as good as he has been built up to be. He would smash our wage structure so I would stay well clear.

      (Quote)

  14. Eric – I think Tielmanns is a quality player but you’re right, he’s going through a bad patch – is it a WC hang over, is it that Leicester as a whole are going through that bad patch, is it that he’s annoyed with the club coz they haven’t offered a new contract he thinks he’s worth or is it that he just doesn’t want to be there anymore and has switched off?!.

I’m not sure, but if we could get him at a good price then I don’t think he’d be a bad signing …. Though I would prefer Maddison.

I’d probably prefer Gallagher too if there’s a chance there. I think he’d be a good option for right of that 3 man midfield – but I also think he could cover wide right for Miggy too and to have players that offer options like that are preferable in a Howe squad.

  15. Heehee .. seem to be in a minority of one of the trippier (non)pen.. so hands up from me

Nice to see longstaff getting some deserved love for his performance. He’s no guimaraes back there but was very progressive and might be a good short term replacement. This could allow Newcastle to factor in guimaraes’ injury to speed up timeline of mf targets but still go after who they really want long term

    Two players I wanted to check thoughts on;
st maximan. To me he looks like he’s been listening and trying to be a more team focussed player. Lacked a bit of sharpness.. like he’s still having to think about what to do not react instinctively .. but no surprises there. I was encouraged by his game in Sunday and he was a touch unlucky not to score

Has Dan burn been found out a bit ??
That’s two penalties he’s got away with in consecutive league games. Anticipate he’ll be targeted by teams going forward

      (Quote)

  16. Maxi still seems to be struggling with the role Howe wants him to play. Too much for him to think about when he normally doesn’t think at all. Also I can’t stand seeing him lying on his back when every body else is tearing around in the cause.

      (Quote)

  17. I think we could get a MFer from Chelsea. Gallagher or Pulisic. Boehly seems to be wanting to put his own stamp on the team and I doubt Potter will last long if he doesnt play the new arrivals so that will leave players he may like with only bench roles.

      (Quote)

  18. Go West – good questions mate. I’m not sure we’ve seen enough of ASM to be able to say really – but what was promising/pleasing was that it was him Howe went with when Bruno was replaced.
That to me suggested that Howe is seeing enough in him to trust him more – it could easily have been Murphy he stuck in ahead of him, and had that been the case I think it would have spelled the end for Maxi. The other positive was that Maxi looked bang up for it too – maybe not the one we’re used to seeing, but he looked lively and involved – fingers crossed 🤞🏼.

Burn for me isn’t a LB but has been excellent there this season. Yes he’s been caught twice recently but I’m not overly concerned by it because other than those 2 incidents he’s been immense – but he could have been sent off yesterday like 😂

      (Quote)

  19. Eric – if we could get someone from Chelsea it would be Gallagher for me.
There’s times I watch him and he can seem a bit headless chicken, but I think that’s him trying too hard sometimes. At Palace I think he showed enough about him and he was only about 21 then.
He’s not going to get a chance at Chelsea with all these players they are bringing in and I think with some Howe coaching and development, I think the lad could be quality

      (Quote)

  20. Good news on Bruno but just as importantly it reminds the owners we need a new midfielder this window. No hanging around until the summer.

      (Quote)

  21. If you were to pick a time for Bruno to have a 2 week injury this would be it. I think we have enough to get at least a point at Palace. We have the FA Cup weekend to rest up so I think Bruno will be back for the League Cup second leg.

  22. PremAndUp: Liverpool, ManU, Spurs and Arsenal still have to come to SJPWin those and we should manage top four.We however, still have to go to City and Chelsea

    I love this post.

I’m still pinching myself that newcastles season at the half way point will be defined by results against that list of teams after years where Newcastles seasons have been defined by results against the bottom 6 teams .

      (Quote)

  23. Southampton second leg is Jan 31, Bruno injured Jan 15, so that is more than 2 weeks to recover. I would expect him on the bench at the very least as it only seems like a sprained or twisted ankle.

  24. I’ve found Klopp pleading Poverty and complaining about state clubs a bit rich. However to give him credit I’ve just checked his transfer record at LFC
    51 players bought, 48 sold
net spend since Oct 2015 £184.55m
which is roughly what we have spent under Eddie Howe

      (Quote)

  25. Prem: Klopp was given a gift of 140 million for Coutihno.

Not sure what some fans are saying about big clubs not selling to each other. They have very short memories. Man City sold Sterling to Chelsea and Jesus to Arsenal in the summer. They also sold that full-back/midfielder to Arsenal. I forget his name.

      (Quote)

  26. Mike Dean was up to his old tricks. I dont know if everybody saw it but he only gave the Ref one angle on the VAR view which made it look like a pen. There was another view where Tripss was fouled 1st. How are they allowed to do that? Even when he is retired as a Ref Mike Dean is still a ****.

      (Quote)

  27. Eric – yeah fair point about selling players top club to top club.
I just thought that while the likes of Palace were interested in Gallagher, Chelsea may prefer to sell to them – but you’re right, and I’m sure the player themselves will have their say. I guess for Gallagher in particular it will depend on whether he wants the chance to compete with Newcastle or stay in London for personal reason & still play PL football at a lower level.

      (Quote)

  28. I don’t think the Chelsea players are significantly better than what we have. Given the wages they will be on, I might take one on loan, but not to buy.

  30. Prem – we’ve been linked with Pulisic, Ziyech, RLC, Broja and Gallagher and of them all the only one I’d be excited to see us sign is Gallagher.

He’d go right of that 3 man midfield for me.

  31. West Ham fans are saying if Moyes is sacked then their only option is Rafa. Would you take him? I certainly wouldnt. I think he is the most overrated manager in our history with a PPG of 1.15 in the PL. Then he went to China and Everton and had a similar PPG. He was good once. He isnt anymore.

Plus he sold Mitro and Toney. I will give him Mitro because he got good money for him. Toney, we got pennies and we could easily have loaned him out.

I have never understood the fan lovefest for Rafa.

      (Quote)

  32. I think The Harrisons still refer to him as a World Class Manager. He is not anymore. Time and tactics have caught up with him. My 15 year old dog was a lot different when he was 15 to when he was 10. I think Rafa is my 15 year old dog who died at 16.

      (Quote)

  33. Half the season gone and we have averaged 2 points a game and that is pretty good.
We have conceded 11 goals and kept 11 clean sheets from the 19 games played and with that defensive record we should really have more than 38 points.
We have probably lost 8 points from the five 0-0 draws and the two 1-1 draws we have played.
We have got 3 strikers who cost us £110m but apart from the last 20 minutes on Sunday we have only had 1 of them on the pitch at the same time.
With the injury to Bruno I would like Howe to keep his starting eleven and to go 4-4-2 with Isak up front with Wilson. I also think Wood would be more effective if he came on as a sub for one of them and had the other as a striker partner.
I know that Wilson and Isak have not always been available but had we been able to play 2 up front we may have won 4 of those games that were draws.
I am hoping that we do not replace Bruno with a midfield player on Saturday and that Howe looks at a 4-2-4 starting eleven.

      (Quote)

  34. Won’t happen Sidekick
Our game is based on pressing with three midfielders supported by Big Joe and Miggy.
More likely to see Big Joe move into the three with Maxi on the left.
If he does want to play with two up front then it will be 4-4-2 not 4-2-4

      (Quote)

  35. Sidekick: the draws were a combination of Refs, VAR and bad finishing. The most egregious misuse of VAR was the Willock goal against Palace. We have the chance to remedy that on Saturday.

Mike Dean is a disgrace. He tried to hand Fulham the game on Sunday by only showing one view of the supposed penalty to the Ref when the other view clearly showed Tripps was fouled. He should be banned from VAR for life.

      (Quote)

  36. Made a little mistake in my previous post and the 4 – 2- 4 in the last paragraph should have read 4-4-2 as mentioned in the earlier paragraph.
A good reminder to proof read my comment before posting.
Still think we should replace the missing Bruno with Isak partnering Wilson up front.

      (Quote)

  37. Sidekick – I can understand why you’d suggest that mate but I think changing our formation to cover 1 player missing could prove too disruptive.

Playing Isak with Wilson may well give a greater goal threat – but it could leave our defence exposed.

Going back to Pardew days I’ve always thought we have an excellent balance with the 4-3-3 formation and I wouldn’t want to mess with the success of our current 4-3-3.

I’d drop Longstaff into the middle – Willock right & Joelinton left of him.

ASM is the obvious to go into the team, that’s who I’d go with. If he wanted the grafter he could play Murphy there or even try Isak – but I’d stick with 4-3-3 and bring Maxi in.

      (Quote)

  38. Do we really want a players as stupid as Connor Gallagher? He is saying he wants to stay and fight for his place. How often does that work out! He has started 2 of the last 11 games and that is with a full midfield out injured. Then you have the recruitment. They are buying MFers and wingers. Do you think Boehly will be happy with Gallagher starting instead of HIS shiny new toys. They have a very unbalanced sqaud full of mfers and wingers. Do they even have a CF.

Oh well, he can always go on loan to West Ham and get caught up in that circus.

  39. Bruce is at it again givng interviews. Why doesnt he just slink off into the night? He is moaning about the abuse he received at NUFC. He actually got very lucky because he managed through Covid with empty stadiums. I am still waiting to see one of the pundits mention what is happening at West Brom at the moment. Brucie knows no shame otherwise he would keep his head down.

      (Quote)

  40. I know I go on about Bruce but he thinks he can talk up his reputation over the last 20 years like the football and the leaving teams in the lurch didnt happen. It must be because he has so many enablers who for some bizarre reason never check any of the facts. His record is pretty much getting teams relegated, jumping ship or getting sacked before a team is relegated (Sunderland, Villa, NUFC, WBA). His CV is not stained with multiple relegations mainly because he was pushed out before the inevitable happened.

Villa were promoted when they sacked him in midtable. West Brom have gone from 2nd bottom to 6th. We all know what has happened at NUFC. I think the Mackems stayed up with BFS.

      (Quote)

  41. Just read an article in Football365 saying NUFC will need to spend big to take the next step. No **** Sherlock. They mention a few players who may not be good enough for the next level like Sean, Willock and Miggy. Maybe, but they can be in the squad.

NUFC currently have the 2nd oldest squad in the PL. Part of that was because we had to get out of the mess Bruce and Ashley had gotten us into. But in the next 2 years we will need to replace quite a few players. It will be a natural process of attrition. The following players will be too old to play 60 games a season:

    Schar 31
    Tripps 31
    BDB 31
    Wilson 31
    Wood 31

That is without even accounting for those about to leave like Ritchie and Darlow.

Replacing those 5 would cost 200 million so Football365 are sort of stating the obvious. Liverpool have the same problem now with their aging MF and attack.

Wood – Moukoko if Dortmund let him go

I won’t be too heartbroken like, it was always Maddison I favoured from Leicester. I always thought there were better players than Tielmanns, just thought he wasn’t a bad option with his contract ran down.

If that’s his craic though I’d say that’s exactly the type of player we DONT want.

He could help keep them up – but if they were to go down he’d be a good championship forward as well.

It looks like we could be replacing him with Danjuma who Howe had at Bmth. He’s in good form for Villarreal and at 25 has his best years ahead of him.

Daniel Levy would probably spit his coffee out if he saw his demands.
