Some shocking footage has shown former Newcastle loanee Jetro Willems being attacked by one of his own supporters during FC Groningen’s defeat on Sunday.
The left-back enjoyed a somewhat successful time on Tyneside during his short spell here and is often remembered fondly, with his strikes against Liverpool and Man City a particular highlight.
Since his loan came to an unfortunate end due to an ACL injury, the Dutchman has struggled to really settle at a club and recapture his best form, only joining FC Groningen in February on a short-term deal.
During a derby match against Heerenveen, Willems was attempting to diffuse a tense situation before he was brutally punched by a home fan and the game was suspended. Watch the incident below:
The home fans were frustrated at being 2-0 down in the 80th minute before the incident occurred, but eventually play did resume and Willems suffered defeat in just his sixth game for his new club.
