Newcastle reject £30m deal as Eddie Howe hopes to sign Premier League CB instead – Report

According to Mark Douglas at the ipaper, Newcastle will reject the opportunity to sign Roma’s Roger Ibanez and pursue a deal for Crystal Palace’s Joachim Andersen instead.

He reports that the Brazilian centre-back has been offered to Newcastle for a fee in the region of £30m, but Eddie Howe has prioritised a move for Andersen.

The 27-year-old has been linked on several occasions over the past month. The Eagles are thought to be demanding around £40m for the Danish international, yet their £35m pursuit of Torino star Per Schuurs – another right-sided centre-back – suggests Andersen could be on the move.

As for Ibanez, it’s believed we’ve shown some interest in the 24-year-old, yet it’s Fulham who are now preparing an ambitious bid for the South American now we’re set to look elsewhere.

Elsewhere, Douglas also reports that talks are ‘ongoing’ for Leicester’s Harvey Barnes. The winger is keen on a move to St James’ Park, but discussions are continuing over the transfer fee and breakdown of payments.

There’s ‘optimism’ a deal will be agreed in the coming days, allowing Barnes to join the squad for next week’s trip to the USA ahead of our involvement in the Premier League Summer Series.

  1. Why would we pay £40M for Anderson when Schuurs is £35M and knows Botman from their Ajax days?

  2. Looks like Eddie Howe is building a Top Trumps team.
Average height of our back four would be 6′ 3″ – and that includes Trippier.

  3. As a CP fan in the U.S. Midwest, Anderson who is a Danish international has proven that he can play on the world stage. At 6’3, he is well regarded. He would really upgrade Newcastle. Looks like he is on his way to the “yellow brick road”.
