Newcastle United have already made £3.2m from our first two games in the Champions League, but could yet earn another £8.3m for qualifying for the last 16.
The Chronicle reveal that teams are awarded £2.4m for every victory (4-1 vs PSG) as well as £800,000 for each draw (0-0 vs AC Milan), while qualification for the group stages is thought to guarantee clubs an initial £12.78m.
This means we’ve already banked around £16m from the competition. This total would increase by £2.4m with each win, with a further £8.3m up for grabs if we make it into the knockout stages.
It’s still a long way off, but another two wins (£4.8m) from our remaining four games and qualification for the last 16 (£8.3m) could hand a £30m boost to our transfer budget heading into 2024.
In comparison, we were awarded just £10,000 for our incredible victory over Manchester City in the Carabao Cup and are playing for another £15,000 in the next round against Manchester United.
Lee Ryder reports that winning the Carabao Cup earns you just £100,000, which highlights the lucrative nature of Champions League football when our 0-0 at the San Siro earned us £800,000 in comparison.
So, not only is Champions League football key to establishing ourselves in Europe an keeping star players happy at St James’ Park, it makes a huge difference financially and could hand our budget a welcome boost should we make it to the last 16.
