Newcastle appoint former England expert as Dan Ashworth confirms “hugely important” new role

Newcastle United have announced that Dr Ian Mitchell will join the club as Head of Psychology.

The club have revealed that he’ll begin his role on 21st November, leaving his position as Head of Performance Psychology at the Football Association of Wales (FAW).

He will work closely with staff and players across all levels at Newcastle, overseeing and offering support on performance psychology across men’s, women’s and Academy teams, also supporting those out on loan.

Mitchell arrives with huge experience, having worked with the England national team during our run to the final of Euro 2020 and World Cup quarter-finals in 2022, also supporting Chris Coleman’s Wales side that reached the semi-finals of Euro 2016. At club level, he’s also worked with Swansea City and Sheffield United following his playing days at Hereford United.

Sporting director Dan Ashworth believes it’s a “hugely important” new role to help players and staff cope with the demands of elite-level sport and is delighted to recruit someone of Mitchell’s expertise and experience, while Ian himself has hailed the club’s “ambitious vision.”

Speaking to NUFC.co.uk, here’s what Mitchell and Ashworth have had to say:

Ian Mitchell“I am delighted for the opportunity to join Newcastle United at this exciting time.”

“The club has an ambitious vision with values that strongly resonate with me. This role will allow us to develop a team and structure that positively impacts on the performance and wellbeing of our staff and players.”

“I am looking forward to meeting everyone at the club and will be fully committed to contributing to the continued success at Newcastle United.”

Dan Ashworth “I am delighted to welcome Ian to Newcastle United, where he will fulfil a hugely important role for staff and players.

“Psychology is a crucial part of the modern game and to recruit someone of Ian’s standing and experience in sport, and in particular football, is very pleasing.

“We are committed to supporting our people, ensuring our staff and players feel fully supported and equipped for the unique challenges of elite-level sports.”
