Former Mag takes Gateshead job after Mike Williamson leaves for new role

Former Newcastle defender Mike Williamson has left Gateshead and took charge of League Two side MK Dons, leaving ex-Toon stopper Rob Elliot in charge on an interim basis.

Williamson has worked wonders with the Heed since becoming manager in 2019, helping them secure promotion back to the National League and keeping them up the following year.

Gateshead also enjoyed a trip to Wembley back in May, where they took on Halifax Town in the FA Trophy final and are now flying high in the National League, sitting sixth in a playoff position after 15 games.

It’s huge blow to the North East team, who must now begin their search for the 39-year-old’s replacement. Rob Elliot will take charge in the mean time, with the former Newcastle goalkeeper stepping in from a technical director role to manage the side alongside Louis Storey and Carl Magnay.

For Williamson, however, it is an exciting step in his managerial career as he looks to take on a role in the football league for the first team with recently relegated MK Dons who are looking to get back on track and push for promotion back to League One.
