Newcastle set to launch creative January offer for Everton’s Amadou Onana – Report

In a hectic day of transfer news on Tyneside, The Telegraph’s Luke Edwards has revealed that Newcastle United are now looking into a deal for Everton’s Amadou Onana.

As we revealed in an exclusive last April, the powerful Belgian has been identified as a potential short and long-term solution to our midfield problems, while Everton’s financial issues have also offered us hope that a deal could be struck.

It’s thought their £50m price tag would not be a problem for us this summer, but our very own FFP/PSR constraints make a January deal difficult. However, Edwards reveals that we are looking into an initial loan deal that includes an obligation to buy this summer. If that fails, we may bring forward a chunk of our summer budget with a view to a January move, providing the price is right. It’s been highlighted for some time that we’ll need to be ‘creative’ to get deals done this month and any loan now, pay later deal would be exactly that.

With a lack of midfield options at present and some doubt around Joelinton’s future after talk of a contract ‘stand-off’, a move for Onana could make so much sense.

The 22-year-old would bring presence, power and bags of potential to our side, not to mention a January deal with Everton is something we’ve negotiated in the past after last year’s move for Anthony Gordon.

  1. Which idiot penned this piece of garbage? Everton loan an influential midfielder when they’ve got such a small squad? To help Newcastle?
Complete rubbish, don’t give up your day job.

The Telegraph’s Luke Edwards has released the story – as we clearly state in the piece. We are simply sharing his information.

You say a loan-to-buy is impossible, but it would include an obligation to buy (again as we state in piece). Unlikely I know, but Brentford loaned their second best player to Arsenal in David Raya on the basis they’d buy this summer.

I can’t see a loan to buy happening for Onana, but I can see why we’d try.

  4. Olly, Everton are down to the bare bones, a small squad struggling with injuries, can you honestly see Everton loaning a player out in a season when they’ve been docked points already? Edwards is clearly in fantasy land, repeating such rubbish doesn’t do anyone any good.

Edwards is the North-East reporter for The Telegraph. He has good contacts and will be sharing what he’s told. I agree that a loan-to-buy offer would probably be laughed off by Everton, but that doesn’t mean we won’t try.
