Craig Hope issues update on Newcastle’s interest in Dominic Calvert-Lewin

Journalist Craig Hope has claimed that he would ‘be surprised’ if Newcastle were to sign Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin after news broke that they were taking a close look at him.

With just one year left on Callum Wilson’s contract this will likely be the last window for Newcastle to make any money back on him given his age and injuring record.

Selling him would leave Eddie Howe with just one recognised striker in Alexander Isak, and that’s exactly why they are monitoring the market for a forward who is talented enough to make an impact but wouldn’t be demanding first-team football every week.

It was reported in the last week or so that Calvert-Lewin’s name was coming up in conversations, but while Hope acknowledged that Newcastle appreciate him, he doesn’t think it’s a priority.

For Howe, he is focusing on improving other areas of the squad first and foremost and may actually looking to keep Wilson on for another year to avoid paying a substantial fee for a backup striker.

When asked on Sky Sports if he thinks Newcastle will sign Calvert-Lewin, Hope said:

“I’d be surprised. Eddie Howe does like Calvert-Lewin. They have enquired about him before in previous windows. This story dropped last week. My information then was ‘yes he’s on a list, but he’s not top of that list and it wouldn’t be a priority’.

“My latest information was that they are looking elsewhere for now.

“I think Eddie Howe’s preference is to try and keep Callum Wilson this summer.”

  1. Can understand where Howe is coming from saying would take a hell of a lot of money to replace Wilson but we can’t take the chance signing a forward is absolute priority if he could stay fit which is extremely questionable he will DCL would be a good signing but just can’t risk a signing like that so hope Craig is right saying he’s not a priority would rather sign Solanke then DCL

Solanke would be a better signing but would probably cost two or three times as much.
We definitely need a Wilson replacement.

  3. I would take Ben Brereton Diaz on loan if we can. He can play LWF or CF. He’s a good finisher & could see him fitting into our attack.

Wilson’s scoring record is excellent, but if he’s out injured he’s very replaceable.

DCL has an equally bad injury record so in that respect he could replace Wilson – but he wouldn’t be a good replacement imo.

We can’t afford a RWF and CF in the same window so loan BBD with the option to buy & buy a quality RWF this window.

  4. Can’t see that Diaz is an improvement on Barnes, let alone Gordon. We would be better off buying someone who is a natural no 9 or 10. DCL isn’t what we want, but neither is Diaz.
I would be looking at Banza from Braga for only £16m and at 27 in his prime. This season has 21 goals and 4 assists from 24.

Joseph totally agree Solanke would cost lot more but all depends on what Howe thinks is the priority Striker or Right winger
