Another day, another new name linked with a possible move to St James’ Park, with reports suggesting Newcastle are one of three Premier League clubs eyeing departing Atletico Madrid defender Mario Hermoso.
HITC’s Graeme Bailey reports that Newcastle are showing interest in the Spanish centre-back, who is set to leave the La Liga giants on a free transfer this summer, but it’s believed Aston Villa are leading the race ahead of ourselves and West Ham.
I can see why we’re scouring the out-of-contract market, with FFP a constant factor and fellow centre-back Tosin Adarabioyo now set to join Chelsea instead. However, Hermoso is a left-footed defender who would surely be an alternative to imminent signings Lloyd Kelly, not the right-sided Tosin.
Either way, Bailey reports that Unai Emery is confident of landing the Spaniard after securing Champions League football for the 2024/25 season, although newly appointed Napoli boss Antonio Conte is also keen.
Stefan Savić is another Atletico Madrid centre-back who is set to leave on a free next month. He is right-sided, but it remains to seen if Newcastle have any interest in the 33-year-old former Man City defender.

I’m sure they are, especially as this is the first time I’ve heard this lad linked to NUFC

Anybody noticed how we’re linked to every player who wants a move? Lazy agents throwing our name in because of the owners’ wealth to try and get better deals from clubs who actually are interested. We’ve been linked to about 70 odd players now and this guy has never been mentioned.

We will be linked to all players by their agents and so called journalists. Believe it when they are on the pitch with the shirt on. Hwtl

I am quite happy for Villa to beat us to players we have absolutely no interest in.
Column filling nonsense.
