Newcastle set to launch bid for England talent as Toon consider transfer U-turn – Report

The Athletic have released an in-depth piece on Newcastle United’s transfer plans, with one section focusing on our ongoing search for another goalkeeper.

After confirming that Arsenal’s Aaron Ramsdale and Valencia’s Giorgi Mamardashvili are both on our radar, Chris Waugh reveals that Newcastle are expected to launch a bid for Burnley’s James Trafford.

It’s believed we have already registered an interest in the 21-year-old and are considering a change of plan on the goalkeeping front. The Athletic state that we had been looking to sign a ‘direct challenger’ for Nick Pope, but our failure to qualify for Europe could see us pursue either a young goalkeeper or an experienced back-up option.

Either way, it seems there’ll be plenty of change in our goalkeeping department this summer. Loris Karius has been released and Martin Dubravka is also expected to leave, meaning at least one stopper is likely to come in.

Mamardashvili has been heavily linked – the Spanish media stated yesterday that we’ve submitted a £35m bid – but a move for Trafford would cost considerably less, even if the England international would be one for the future and unlikely to take Pope’s No 1 spot anytime soon.
