Keith Downie responds to claims Newcastle have signed another free agent

Sky Sports’ Keith Downie has played down claims that Asmir Begovic is set to join Newcastle United as our third-choice goalkeeper.

Responding to a report from SportMedia1 – who claimed it was a ‘done deal’ earlier today – Downie said, “Not true guys. No Begovic to Newcastle” in an update on Twitter.

The 36-year-old has played for Eddie Howe at Bournemouth and may have been a realistic replacement for Loris Karius. However, it sounds like any suggestions he’ll sign are premature at best.

Begovic was at St James’ Park earlier this month for England’s friendly with Bosnia ahead of Euro 2024. That may have added some fuel to the fire following today’s rumours, but it seems he was only on Tyneside to complete media work with his country in action.

Speaking about Begovic after the stopper signed for Bournemouth back in 2017, Howe said: “Asmir is an outstanding goalkeeper who has proved himself capable of performing at the highest level over a number of years. He is a leader as well and exactly the kind of character you want in the team.”

  1. As a 3rd choice free transfer I think he’d be an excellent option – especially if we are signing Trafford aswell. Young Trafford would have 2 first class mentors in Pope & Begovic to train with day in day out.
