Calvert-Lewin No Longer Considered

With recent reports suggesting earlier in the week that Dominic Calvert-Lewin was possibly wrapping up a deal that would see him through the doors at St James’ Park. Reaction to this news on social media has had a very mixed response with some Newcastle United fans saying that it’s an uninspired choice as Calvert-Lewin just doesn’t score enough goals. Others have however argued that he has been playing in a poor Everton side that hasn’t created so many chances for the England centre-forward.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin hasn’t scored over ten goals in the league since the 2020-21 Premier League season. Granted he has had a few injuries, but last season he only managed to bag seven goals in thirty-two games. Fortunately for Toon fans not too keen on this signing, the deal seems to have fallen through with Everton asking for around £40 million pounds. This news will come as a welcome bonus to fans who want a bit more ambition when it comes to bolstering the forward positions at the club.

PSR Moves May Provide Short-Term Solution

Newcastle United’s attempts to navigate the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) through player swap deals may provide a short-term solution. The Magpies, under the Saudi Public Investment Fund, have invested heavily in recent windows, but the PSR has somewhat restricted their spending.

As the PSR deadline on 30th June approaches, Newcastle are scrambling to stay within the three-year allowable loss limit of £105m.

This of course is a bit of a blow to fans as a lot of us feel that these measures are put in place to protect the Big 6 Cartel. The Toon along with other clubs have started to engage in swap deals where two players are exchanged for similar fees in separate transactions. These deals exploit PSR accounting rules by booking transfer fees immediately while spreading outgoing fees over the new signing’s contract length (if I have not got that one right don’t bite my head off, but I’m feeling confident I have).

A prominent example of this is funnily the failed deal involving Everton’s Dominic Calvert-Lewin which we spoke about before moving on to this. Many suspected the move was linked to Newcastle’s Yankuba Minteh heading in the opposite direction. Newcastle has also been linked with a player-plus-cash deal for Wolves defender Max Kilman, involving academy product Elliot Anderson. Any fee received for Anderson would be recorded as ‘pure profit’ under PSR rules, unlike a fee offset against a player’s book value.

While these deals are legal, they have frustrated some clubs enough to raise the issue with the Premier League. Reports indicate that the Premier League is considering forming a working group to address the loophole, but any changes would not be implemented before the PSR deadline on 30th June so for now it could well help the club over the line and be a clever bit of work from the board if The Magpies take advantage of this loophole. This of course can not be seen as a long-term solution for the club.
