To the dismay of some Newcastle United fans hoping for good news on Sunday, Crystal Palace named Marc Guehi in their starting 11 for their final pre-season friendly of the summer at home to Nantes on Sunday.
I remain hopeful he’ll sign, despite suggestions that Palace are holding out for a whopping £65m after ongoing talks between Paul Mitchell and Steve Parrish, but the fact he started and captained Oliver Glasner’s side is a clear sign that nothing is agreed just yet.
Starting alongside Fulham-linked Joachim Andersen, Guehi was actually at fault for the opening goal (watch below), where Nantes centre-back Jean-Charles Castelletto beat him in the air from a corner to hand the Ligue 1 side a 1-0 lead:

There’s not many weaknesses to his game, but this can be one of them as a 6 foot centre-back. #NUFC

There’s not many weaknesses to Guehi’s game and he coped well physically at Euro 2024 – he was superb against a big and physical Serbia team in our opening game – but this is something he is susceptible to as a relatively short (6 foot) central defender.
Guehi was taken off after an hour, shortly after new signing Daichi Kamara equalised for the Eagles to make it 1-1.
Hopefully we can finally strike an agreement in the coming days to give the fanbase a lift heading into our opening game next Saturday.

Still can’t get over the 65 m price tag when we paid 35m last season for Barnes. I know people says he’s an England player and that dictates the high price + PL experience. However the bar is very low considering the England team and performances! however Barnes got his England cap.

I’ve watched a few games where guhei was hopeless even against us. Think there is better out there for less money. Need funds for a winger.

There has to be better value out there, from what I have seen of him he makes quite a few mistakes positionally but often uses his pace to rectify things.
Schar also can often get caught out of position and often doesn’t have the pace to rectify things.
With good coaching Guehi can improve, it is just how much?

I remember the good old day of Steven Taylor.
Everybody thought he was brilliant, throwing himself in front of shots and diving into tackles. Again, an indication that he was always a couple of yards out of position and half a yard behind the opposition.

Guehi is bad in the air, so is Anderson, they WAIT for the crows. Instead of going to meet it, and guehi rarely goes over half way line,
