Steve Parish issues Marc Guehi update as Palace break silence after Newcastle bids

Crystal Palace chief Steve Parish has spoken out on Newcastle United’s attempts to sign Marc Guehi – and it’s not the update we were all hoping for.

Speaking to Sky Sports News, the Eagles’ co-owner and chairman insists “nobody” has matched Palace’s valuation of the 24-year-old yet, stating clubs must pay “superstar money” to sign a “superstar player.”

This suggestions our third bid – a reported £55m plus £5m in add-ons – has NOT been accepted, with Parish calling the England international a “generational talent” that they would “love to keep”, adding that he’s putting no pressure on the club by attempting to force a move.

Parish said: “Nobody has got to the valuation yet. If you want a superstar player you need to pay superstar money. It’s not near the point where we have to make a decision.

“We love having him and would love to keep him. If someone else wants to have him they need to make it really difficult for us. He’s a generational talent. Marc wants to progress his career and if the right opportunity is there and it’s right for us I think it’s something he might be interested in, but he’s certainly not putting any pressure on the club.”

The question now is, do Newcastle make another bid or do we switch to other targets? Whatever happens, we could do with making progress soon after spending the last 10 days working on a deal for Guehi.

  1. I don’t get why this is difficult?!?!!

Would we be ok if NUFC accepted £10m less than our valuation for Gordon or Isak?!.

If a club offered £90m for Bruno when his £100m buy out was in place & we accepted it?!.

Palace aren’t playing silly games here – they have stated how much it would cost to buy Guehi now – he still has 2 years of his contract left so they aren’t forced to sell him.

If he’s the player we want, spend the money!! If it’s too much, move on to a cheaper target – it’s that simple.

I think the lad is very good, but I don’t see him as a statement signing & I think there’s other options out there – but if Howe sees him as a key player, then make it happen or move on!!.

  3. Time to move on. Too much to pay for a player that is good, but not brilliant. With only two years of his contract remaining it’s far too much. There are cheaper Centre Backs out there that are just as good. Enough time wasted on this transfer.

  4. Solid Player, but not worth the money they are asking. Why has nobody else been interested in buying him if he’s that good?

Let’s stop Wasting time & focus on dealing with people who want to do business. Crystal Palace can hold onto a player who doesn’t want to be there and let’s see what his value is next year.

  5. If we are not going to pay the money for Guehi. Get someone else in before they go elsewhere.
Logan Costa, Bijol both looked good. And could probs get them both for less than Guehi.
Think we still need a number 6. They are vital for getting points away from home.
Again we want an upgrade on the right wing. But I think we need to give Barnes a good run in the team. Gordon, Isai and Barnes front 3. Let Gordon and Branes swap wings throughout games and keep the opposition guessing.

  6. We tried to negotiate with them – his contract will close out next season so Palace will lose out.

Manure just signed de Ligt for £50mil and he has better stats for a similar age, no reason we should pay more for Guehi.

Let’s get Thiaw for half the price – isn’t he younger and can play across the whole back line? I suspect Thiaw would be a lower wage and also more comfortable being on the bench behind Schar

  7. I get that some are saying, ‘just pay the money’, but, the reality is, he is in the last 2 years of his contract, and IMO is being massively overpriced. Is he quality? Absolutely. Is he worth £65million plus?….Not certain. IMO, Palace were hoping that there would be a bidding war for Guehi, and they could get their money. Clearly there isn’t going to be that (probably for the reasons stated above).
I have no doubt, that we are working on other options, and think that right now, we pull the plug, with thoughts about looking at a deal in January, or even next summer. Ambition should still be, right sided, central defender, and right sided forward. Get two decent players in, and I will be more than happy.

  8. Palace are doing nothing wrong here. They have set a price & aren’t budging from it – that’s their player & their prerogative. I’d expect little else from NUFC – especially if Liverpool do come sniffing for Gordon.

A player is only worth what a buying club is prepared to pay though.

I’m not saying just pay the money. I’m saying if we want him THAT much then match their valuation & force them to sell – if we see him as such a key player.

If not, then stop wasting time. Palace don’t need to sell, but we DO need a new CB so it’s our time we’re wasting here.

  9. Mark guehi is not a superstar, is a good player, won nothing club or international levels & never will if he & agent don’t step in. £55 millin is too much, when you consider how much we paid for isak, look what he did last season & how many goals Palace conceded

  10. Geordie – but when you consider Max Kilman has just gone to WH for around £50m – he’s 27 and won less that Guehi.

I think £65m is excessive for the lad – despite thinking he’s a very good player … BUT, like I say, Palace are only doing what I’d hope we would do if Liverpool came for Gordon 🤷🏼‍♂️.

  11. Much as Guehi is a good player Palace are under no pressure to sell and they are happy to keep him.
If we think he is worth less than they are asking for and they are not prepared to compromise on the price we should move on.
    Simple as!

  12. I get the impression the club has a specific budget to buy two players. I expect it’s either Guehi plus a £30m right forward, or Thiaw and a £60m right forward. If we can’t get Guehi with enough change to buy a right forward, forget about him. He’s good, he’s not world class. If he was that good then a CL team would have snapped him up, instead we’re the only ones stupid enough to consider paying what Palace are asking. That should be a massive red flag. MOVE ON.

  13. Too much indecision trying to buy players! How many players have we been linked with that have been bought by other clubs? In my opinion PIF don’t want to spend any money, so when the window closes and nobody has come in, they can say “ well we tried “ Deep pockets and short arms!
