Al-Ahli closing in on £50m deal that could secure Newcastle summer windfall

According to The Times, Saudi Pro League side Al-Ahli are closing in on the signing of Ivan Toney; who could hand Newcastle a handy windfall as a result.

Al-Ahli are part-owned by PIF and could do us a favour if a big-money move goes through, as Newcastle are due 30% of the sell-on fee Peterborough receive from Brentford.

The Times report that Brentford are holding out for £50m and are resigned to losing the former Toon striker. Based on that fee, Peterborough would land £10m if they had a 20% sell-on clause and Newcastle would be entitled to 30% of that, giving us £3m.

Speaking on the Hard Truth podcast about Toney and their ongoing agreement with Newcastle, Peterborough United chairman Darragh MacAnthony said: “We invited Newcastle to share in Ivan’s future success with a sell-on fee.

“They agreed and they wanted 50% of any future transfer profit…that was never going to happen as we were paying a fee for Ivan as well, so we settled on 30%.

“We have received £10 million so far from Brentford and we will receive X amount – I’m not allowed to say the number – of any future profit and Newcastle will receive 30% of what we get from us. We earn money every time Ivan moves and so do Newcastle. That’s how these deals are structured and I’m all for it. It’s like a chain reaction and it’s the best thing.

  1. Yep, don’t you hate click bate titles that journalists use to get you to read an article. Cynical !

The articles title deliberately suggests with “£50m” that a LARGE windfall will be due.

Not really. We’ve stated the fee Al-Ahli are expected to pay – nowhere do we say it’ll be a big windfall. We’re just sharing the fact a former Mag is on the move and we stand to benefit.

£3m isn’t nothing. Could buy you another Minteh or get us closer to signing Guehi.

  4. This is all Mike Ashley Fare what is happening at Newcastle!
Darren Eales regaling the fans with songs post Soton match were eerily similar to Ashley in the Bigg Market that went on to usher in a depressing era.
Were those the actions of a board with something to hide overcompensating with the fans?
Seems like a desperate from them trying to keep people onside before this club embarks upon another mighty fall!
