Sky Sports’ Keith Downie has revealed that Newcastle will NOT be able to sign an expensive right-winger if we secure a £65m-plus deal for Marc Guehi.
Responding to fans on X, the North East reporter insists that we’d have to look at a ‘cheaper winger’ or a loan with an obligation to buy deal should Guehi arrive for big money, which may explain why we’re also pursuing Bayer Leverkusen’s Edmond Tapsoba and Chelsea’s Axel Disasi.
We reported earlier this month that Newcastle have explored a loan-to-buy deal for Chelsea’s Noni Madueke and Downie has confirmed our interest in the 22-year-old, feeling he’s ‘one to watch’ given the Blues’ need to trim their inflated squad.
Asked about Raheem Sterling’s availability, he feels the 30-year-old is unlikely to fit in Eddie Howe’s thinking and will not be suitable based on the ‘astronomical’ wages he’d demand.
Downie also feels Miguel Almiron could be key to creating space for a new right-winger, admitting he ‘can’t see’ another signing if the Paraguayan remains on Tyneside.

Agreed Olly much better outcome for the club and team to move on from the palace Del Boy carry on

Our priority should be our defence this season. We scored a record number of goals last season – our forwards have the quality & ability.
Add to that the fact that Barnes will be coming in and can get goals – our midfield need to up their contribution. That may be helped with Tonali coming in and freeing up the likes of Bruno, Joelinton, Willock.
Improve the defence & concede few goals. Krafth did well to cover Schar but he’s not a CB and is a squad player with respect to him. We need to strengthen the defence.
That said, I don’t think that has to mean £65m on Guehi.
