Alan Shearer has warned Paul Mitchell and Darren Eales that the cub need a “big signing” over the final five days of the summer transfer window.
Speaking on the Rest Is Football podcast today, Shearer seemed irked by our lack of transfer business and insisted it would be “embarrassing” for our sporting director and CEO if we don’t get a “statement” deal done this week.
Our former number nine feels we “need to bring in Marc Guehi” after a number of failed bids, believing it would “reflect really bad” on Mitchell and Eales if we didn’t end the window on a high after failing to improve our starting 11 so far this summer, with a centre-back and right-winger still yet to sign.
Shearer said: “They need to give the fans a bit of excitement. Darren Eales and Paul Mitchell, sporting director and chief executive, they need to do something in the next week, because they cannot go into September without bringing a big signing to Newcastle. They need to bring Marc Guehi in. They need to have a statement signing.
“It would be really embarrassing for those two, in particular, who are now running the football club, for them to go into September without bringing a big hitter or a big statement signing in, I think it would look really, really poor on those two.
“They’ve made several bids for Guehi at Crystal Palace. They just need to get it over the line. They cannot go into September without bringing a big signing in – it would reflect really bad on those two.”
Really interesting to hear @alanshearer thoughts on Darren Eales, Paul Mitchell and Newcastle’s transfer window or lack thereof so far. 🤞🏼Something happens this week.

I agree with Shearer there is something not right with the team and the club reflected on the pitch .. likely Mitchell v Eddie problems and no Amanda and mehmad .. they better get a grip before luck runs out and the wheels start coming off … hope I am wrong as it ei destroy the momentum we had

What iv been saying for the past month. Eales and Mitchell are pathetic.

I really don’t think we should sign Guehi. He’s not worth that money.
I’d rather have a right sided forward given how poor Murphy is. He’s a championship player at best. Almiron is twice the player but it’s clear he’s surplus to requirements

Likely recent in-fighting at the top across Mitchell, Eales, Howe and Saveley is now clearly filtering down the club and on to the pitch.
Defeats on Wednesday and Sunday (both highly probable given recent form) together with an underwhelming transfer window and off-field player scandals could boil over with us looking for a new head coach during the international break.
Howay the lads !!!!????

I agree that we need a statement signing but not Guehi, Palace are pulling our trousers down with demands of £70m.
A statement signing is a player who improves the team but at same time doesn’t set a precedent for us being ripped off every transfer.
Anyway there are better CB’s out there for far less, hopefully there has always been a plan B for that position.

The problem here is once Maguire went for 80millon and Fofana went for 70millon Guehi was going to command the same fee especially with it being a british player as well and a deal between to premier league clubs so cant blame Parish for wanting more or less the same because we would be exactly the same

Personally speaking i don’t think we will make a statement signing , i think their is a lot more going on at a hire level , we may lose Eddie he’s his own man and if things aren’t right he’ll walk , just my thoughts.

Forget new signings!! ( for the next 45 seconds)
What about the top end of the club. All that work Amanda puts in and after 3 years she’s gone??? Man U take our chief player finder and they spend £150 million plus more to come so we hear. Agree with Shearer something isn’t right but it will come out in the wash it always does. Always left with mud on our faces and have the rest of the premier league laughing!!! As for Howe walking, only walking he will do is straight into the England job!!! Good luck to him because he obviously isn’t getting the support he deserves from his superiors!!!
