Alan Shearer’s brutal eight-word reaction as Newcastle reach 11pm without a signing

Alan Shearer believes Newcastle United have ‘failed’ Eddie Howe following a pretty awful end to the summer transfer window.

Reacting to George Caulkin’s post-window assessment for The Athletic, Shearer said: ‘They haven’t helped Eddie at all. Failed him.’

This comes after the club failed to sign anyone over the final three and a half weeks of the window, with no centre-back or right-winger arriving, Marc Guehi remaining at Crystal Palace and a deadline day bid for Nottingham Forest’s Anthony Elanga falling flat.

We may have kept star players Bruno Guimaraes, Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon, but they may be questioning the fact we haven’t signed a single player that improvs Eddie Howe’s best 11 all summer.

PSR has clearly impacted us again – to an extent – and Howe has mentioned the importance of signing the “right players”, but we’ve known about our need for a new right-winger and centre-back all year.

It feels like we spend too long on the Guehi deal and lacked a plan B once that collapsed. An all round mess and so many lessons to learn.

  1. The minute Palace cup-tied him, we should have walked away, they had no intention of selling him, we’ve acted like amatuers. We needed someone better than what we have, didnt have to be him

  2. CEO and Mitchell need to get the tictac for this, like being back under the Ashley regime with Charnley not having a clue what he’s doing.

Bruno and Isak will be leaving as soon as they can after this charade, and you couldn’t blame them.

PIF need to take the Premier League to court for stopping them being able to compete financially against the cartel of 6.

  3. Eddie Howe had far too much influence
Mitchell signs up and comings not the likes of Geuyi and so there was a conflict and will be until one of them departs.
Tenth place will not keep Isak Bruno or Gordon at this club.
Everyone in the current top 7 strengthened while we dithered without a plan B
In 3 easy fixtures we have looked second best even to Forest reserves
    Worrying

  4. John Morrison: PSR has clearly impacted us again

We should have walked away after the 3rd offer was rejected, then maybe Mitchell could have retained a level of dignity.

  5. Eddie said he would stay as long as he was given everything he needed.
I guess that’s the cue for him to talk to the FA about the England job.

  6. Agree with John

Eddie needed to loosen up on his fixation with Geuhi. Plenty of alternatives and for a cheaper price. Can’t help but think that Eddie didn’t help himself.

  7. Howe is just as responsible as Mitchell and Eales ..PIF must be fuming and they need to act to sort out the problems that led to this debacle

  11. As they say on the Google Box “Parish played Mitchell and his team like a two bob fiddle”
In spite of what they say on their CVs we all now know now how good they really are!

  13. Turned out to be an unmitigated disaster, and I tried to stay positive right up until the end, but the insane failed attempt at elanga actually embarrassed me. What were they thinking with that? They already did a deal with forest in June so they knew what the deal with elanga was. Guehi saga showed how out of depth they were and the late elanga attempt was downright embarrassing.

I’m hoping they learned their lesson and the team can do well in spite of it all, come January hopefully we’re challenging for top 4 and still and cups, then the management/recruitment team can lay down a marker.

I’m not holding out hope for any of that though, everyone got better. All we did was lose EA and Minteh. Going to be a long few months to January.

  15. I believe signing nobody was the plan, now that Amanda and mehdad have left I honestly believe PIF want Eddie to go too. I just don’t think they want to sack him as he’s popular with the fans. Apparently PIF have released a statement to say they still are ambitions and will show it. Maybe that means Eddie will depart soon and a bigger name comes in I have no idea what’s happening but what I can say is this window felt more and more like the cockney days and I don’t like it

  16. There is a counter argument that says Howe’s intransigence and stubborn loyalty to sub-standard players failed Mitchell and Eales.

Maybe they said “sell Krafth, Murphy, Longstaff etc etc” and Howe said “no way – sell my adopted sons Jacob and Sean or I’m off to England where I can pick them in my squad”.

I know most of you will be shaking your heads and tutting at my post, no doubt, but in the meantime ask yourself this – name a premiership team other than the three promoted ones who would take (and regularly play) Murphy or Longstaff or have Krafth in their squad.

  17. If you’s want the blame game look at Eales this wouldn’t have happened under Staveley and Ghoudossi first window for Eales and he’s failed miserable Craig Hope done a good article in that Mail well worth a read
