Howe – ‘I understand fan frustration…but this is why we might sign no one’

Speaking to the media this morning, Eddie Howe has been discussing our push for late signings and what’s been a hugely “difficult” summer transfer window.

He totally understands the ‘fan frustration’ and admits “I’m not going to sit here and say this has been a brilliant transfer window”, but does attempt to explain why it’s been so tough – and why we won’t just sign someone for the sake of it ahead of tonight’s 11pm deadline.

Despite work going on behind the scenes to bring someone in, Howe insists that we’ve got to find the “right solutions” amidst our battle with PSR, available funds and player availability, saying the “worst thing we could do is bring in the wrong players” who could “harm us in the future.”

“I understand the fans’ frustration over the transfer window,” Howe said. “We’re all in it together. We need one united cause – and that’s a cause against everyone we’re playing. What we can’t do is tear ourselves apart. We’re a formidable force when we’re united.”

“I’m not going to sit here and say this has been a brilliant transfer window for us. I don’t know if expecting (more business) is the right word, but we are hopeful of course.

“When we start out and go into the window, you know there’s various parts of the squad that needed looking at, work and needed to improve. It’s the same wish for everyone working inside Newcastle, we’ve got to find solutions but they’ve got to be the right solutions. The worst thing we could do is bring in the wrong players, the wrong players could harm us for the future.

“We’re in a difficult situation with PSR, available funds and attracting the right players who we think can make a difference. That is such a delicate spot for us and we have to hit it right. If we don’t (find the right player/deal), then doing nothing is perhaps the best option, as frustrating  as that is.

“There’s no one saying, ‘We don’t want to support that.’ We do. Altogether. We have got to find the right solutions.”

Hopefully a suitable deal presents itself that works for Howe, improves the team and is fine from a PSR perspective. However, you do wonder if a lack of planning has cost us at this late stage when the money – £70m of it – has been there for Guehi all this time.

  1. I understand Howe has to say the right things – but come on.

You can’t cry PSR when you’re chasing a player for £70m – it’s hardly hands tied money is it?!.

You also can’t convince me that the £70m player is the ONLY ‘right’ player available to bring in!!.

What does that even mean ‘right’ player – right in what way? Talent – so everyone else is no good?? you couldn’t coach them to be better??
They have the wrong attitude? – so they are all bad eggs?! What does ‘right’ even mean???.

Obviously Howes number one target but if Palace keep moving the goalposts then that’s on them not us.
The thing I get from this is he wants him and if we can’t get him for what we are willing to pay this window we won’t buy an alternative but revisit it in either Jan or next Summer.
I really don’t think we will get an alternative RCB this window I can see us getting Trafford though.
    anyway let’s see what happens

  3. For people who are digging out fans who are voicing their frustrations – this is dream THEY sold!!.

This isn’t unrealistic fan expectations – they sold the same dream to Isak & Bruno & Gordon.

We have SEVENTY MILLION to spend!!.

Unless Botman or Lascelles are making a quicker than expected recovery – we need CBs through the door. This isn’t just about quality – we need bodies in to see us through this season.

I don’t even care if we don’t spend the full £70m – that’s not what it’s about for me. Just get the players in we need.

  4. AG – that approach didn’t work for Klopp at Liverpool when they banked on getting Bellingham & RM had other ideas.
They still haven’t solved that one yet.

We go back in a years time & Liverpool want him to replace VVD or Chelsea decide they want him.

We are a club that can hold out for our number 1 target – we aren’t close to being that team yet.

Lascelles is out for a long time. Schar is decent but entering what is likely his last season – and Krafth is the back up. All 3 could are out of contract at the end of the season (I believe).

You can’t tell me that there’s only Guéhi that Howe thinks is better than those 3.

So even if we can’t get Guehi – get the 2nd or 3rd choice because they will remain in the squad next season when those 3 leave.

Unless they plan to extend there contracts another season – which would be another mistake again imo.
