So this week’s issue of SportBild had some pretty interesting news relayed to our beloved football club. Apparently, there is a tug-of-war over Leroy Sane’s contract and they are currently struggling to come to terms over the player’s wages. The German media has been referring to this as a poker battle with the former 28-year-old winger who joined Bayern from Manchester City in 2020 not yet willing to pen a deal. As his current contract runs down, there have been rumours about a potential move to Newcastle United.
Reports suggest that Sane was ‘surprised’ by the links to Newcastle United, as he believes he is deserving of a club consistently competing for titles and guaranteed Champions League football. It’s said he believes that signing for a team like Newcastle, who finished seventh in the Premier League last season and currently beneath him. I am sure the wages would be fine and he would receive ample compensation for his services just like if you were to a tool such as https://www.compensationcalculatoruk.co.uk/criminal-injuries-compensation-calculator. The question is though if he feels the club is beneath him do we really want him at St James’ Park in the first place?
Sane’s current contract at Bayern expires at the end of this season. While a renewal offer has been tabled, it comes with a reduced salary. However, the deal could include bonuses that would allow him to earn close to €20m annually, making an agreement possible if the financial package is adjusted suitably.
Newcastle’s Not For Him
Despite Newcastle United’s ambitions, Sane seems uninterested in a move to St. James’ Park. As reported by Christian Falk, discussions between Sane and Bayern Munich have been slow, partly due to his recent injury, which has limited his playing time this season. Sane has made just 78 minutes of appearances since returning from groin surgery (this is a huge red flag as he is not getting any younger), though his overall record at Bayern remains impressive, with 49 goals and 50 assists in 179 games since joining in 2020.
While we Magpies might hope our recent resurgence under Eddie Howe could sway Sane, the reality is that competing for his signature against teams like Manchester United, Liverpool, or Arsenal is a significant challenge mainly due to the financial restrictions imposed on us by the league. I would also add that I personally don’t think we require his services now we have tied key players like Anthony Gordon down to a long-term deal. We have that position all tied up for now and having a player at the club that doesn’t want to be here when we have a young rising star readily available makes zero sense to me.
Future Uncertainty
As Sane’s contract expires in the summer of 2025, he will be free to negotiate with other clubs starting January 1. Manchester United could still make a serious bid for the German forward, particularly if talks with Bayern Munich remain unresolved. However, if Bayern fails to present a contract that satisfies Sane’s demands, it opens the door for other top clubs to make their move. While Newcastle fans might hope for a big-name signing like Sane, it seems, for now, their club does not align with the player’s ambitions and personally, I don’t think he aligns with ours either.
