Newcastle officials spotted in France as Toon eye Ligue 1 attacker – Report

Newcastle United’s scouting team recently observed Lille’s Jonathan David in action last weekend, according to a new report.

The striker scored in a 1-1 draw against Lyon, marking his seventh goal in seven league starts this campaign, and TBR Football report that Newcastle scouts were in the stands to watch the 24-year-old alongside officials from Chelsea.

David’s contract with Lille is due to expire next summer and it’s thought that the Canada international is unwilling to renew at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy. As a result, he could sign a pre-contractual agreement with a foreign club (outside France) in January or be sold for a reduced rate.

Alexander Isak has been performing well, netting his third goal in as many games in the club’s 1-0 win over Arsenal last weekend. But Newcastle did not have a back-up for the forward, with Callum Wilson yet to kick a ball this season after struggling to make a full recovery from a procedure on his back.

It’s thought that, in the long term, the former England international has no future at St James’ Park and could be sold in the New Year. Like David, Wilson is out of contract at the end of the 2024/25 campaign, leaving Newcastle on the lookout for a replacement.

David would mark a sensible buy for the club which have been hamstrung by PSR rules. There is speculation that the one area that they will look to improve in the January window in the right-wing, but they would not be able to afford anything else. As such, David makes a lot of sense for Eddie Howe’s team given his age, availability and eye-catching form over in France.

  2. I love the way it’s always “Newcastle scouts” were seen, or “club officials” but names are never mentioned.
That would be too much like journalism!

  4. Just a thought but learn to hustle and sell some players. For 100 to 150 million Newcastle can have balance and a plethora of players that can play across the front and ACM without loosing Isak, Gordon or Bruno. Selling Barnes, Wilson, Almiron, Trippier and Murphy should get Newcastle 60 to 70 million and add to the 65 to 85 million Newcastle are supposed to have in their budget. So 125 to 155 million to spend. David will cost 10 million agent fee plus possibly 10 to get off Lille in January 20 to 25 million. Randal Kolo Muani CF or No10 on loan to buy or 35 million. Bryan Mbeumo will cost 50million RW or CF. Donyell Malden LW or CF for 35 million. Karen Adeyemi 50 million RW or attacking MF, Maghnes Akliouche same positions 30million.
