According to reports from Argentinian outlet TyC Sports, River Plate are considering a January move for out of favour Newcastle United winger Miguel Almiron; who is thought to be available for £15m.
Almiron has struggled for game time this season, losing his place down the right to Jacob Murphy or Anthony Gordon. The 30-year-old has started just one league game this term – a 2-1 defeat to Chelsea last month – and it does feel like a suitable time for him to depart for all parties.
With the Argentinian club set to take part in the Club World Cup next year, they will be looking to bolster their squad and may attempt to lure Almiron back to South America after several years in England. The questions is, could they afford him?
Journalist Renzo Pantich also claims that Almiron is a fan of River Plate, who are ‘probing in a formal and concrete manner’ regarding his possible availability.
However, with still over 18 months left on his current deal it remains to be seen whether they would be able to meet Newcastle’s asking price which is believed to be around €18m (£15m). This was an issue for other clubs over the summer, where MLS side Charlotte FC pulled out of a deal after failed to agree a fee for the winger.
With Almiron struggling for game time, entering his 30s and reportedly wary of his position in the Paraguay side after a lack of starts this season, let’s hope something can be agreed in 2025, giving Miggy a fresh start and Newcastle some funds to pursue a new right-winger of our own.
