Newcastle staff ‘impressed’ by U21 midfielder after first-team call-up – Report

Newcastle United’s Academy is finally on the up and showing clear signs of improvement, highlighted by the fact a host of U21 and U18 talents are currently on international duty with England’s youth sides.

Lewis Miley received his first England U21 call-up yesterday, while Trevan Sanusi, Leo Shahar and Sean Neave are with the Young Lions’ U18s squad, but the latest English talent impressing on Tyneside is Anthony Munda.

Writing in a recent Q&A piece for The Athletic, Chris Waugh was asked which youngster is pushing for first-team minutes. Having initially mentioned exciting winger Trevan Sanusi as a contender, the North-East reporter revealed that Munda is one to watch.

He revealed that Eddie Howe’s coaching staff have been impressed by the 18-year-old midfielder and called him up to first-tam training before last month’s 1-0 defeat to Brighton.

It’s believed his progress is being ‘monitored closely’ after a string of standout displays with our U21s, who have won three of their last four games after victories over Leeds, Aston Villa and Blackburn.

Munda has represented England at U18 level and is the latest teenager knocking on the first-team door. However, minutes in Howe’s first-team may be hard to come by now Lewis Miley is back from injury, leaving us with plenty of depth in midfield alongside Bruno Guimaraes, Sandro Tonali, Sean Longstaff, Joe Willock and Joelinton.
Another one to watch and perhaps a player who will be loaned out in the coming windows, especially if his route to first-team level on Tyneside is blocked for now.
