Newcastle United are in the market for a right-winger and another name was linked with a potential switch to St James’ Park over the weekend in Johan Bakayoko.
Belgian outlet Foot News report that the club are seriously considering a January move for the PSV winger, who was linked with Liverpool over the summer and previously subject to a big-money bid from Brentford.
Alongside Bakayoko, Newcastle have also been linked with Bees star Bryan Mbeumo and Nottingham Forest’s Anthony Elanga, who was targeted on deadline day over the summer.
However, both Foot News and a weekend report from TBR suggest that Belgium international Bakayoko appears to be a key focus, with Newcastle monitoring the 21-year-old closely since the summer.
The skillful winger bagged 14 goals and 14 assists in all competitions last season and has started the current campaign with five goals and three assists, recently scoring in PSV’s 4-0 win over Girona in the UEFA Champions League.
Financial concerns tied to Profit and Sustainability rules remain a hurdle for Newcastle. They had to sanction the sales of Yankuba Minteh and Elliot Anderson last summer and they are not out of the woods yet.
At a recent fan event, sporting director Paul Mitchell said that the club will still have financial restrictions in the January window. “I know no one wants to hear it, but January is always a difficult window so I don’t think we should necessarily go into it expecting any different to any other previous January,” he said.
