After Tuesday’s brilliant 2-0 win at Arsenal, Newcastle United are in cup action again as the FA Cup comes to St James’ Park for a Third Round tie with Andy Woodman’s Bromley.
Alexander Isak will be rested and Nick Pope, Jamaal Lascelles and Callum Wilson remain out through injury, but Emil Krafth could be back in the squad as Eddie Howe looks to keep the run going after seven straight wins.
Here’s the much-changed side we’re backing the boss to go with ahead of today’s 3pm kick-off.
Predicted XI vs Bromley
(4-3-3): Vlachodimos – Trippier, Schar, Kelly, Targett – Longstaff, Bruno, Miley – Almiron, Osula, Barnes.
Of course, this would mean wholesale changes from our midweek win over Arsenal. But, with our best XI on fire, fatigued at the end of Tuesday’s game and facing two league games next week against Wolves and Bournemouth, it feels like a perfect time to rotate.
This would give several fringe players and a few youngsters a big chance to impress Eddie Howe against League Two Bromley, with the boss revealing on Friday that we have so many “very good players” desperate to show what they can do.
It would be great see Lewis Miley back in action after a 2024 disrupted by two unfortunate injuries, while Will Osula will surely get an opportunity from the start with Isak rested and Wilson out injured.
It could also be a chance for Lloyd Kelly to build some confidence and play in his best position, with Greek stopper Odysseas Vlachoidimos also likely to be in goal with Pope absent and Dubravka in the midst of discussing his future.
Fabian Schar has been suspended for our last two so it makes sense for him to start, while Bruno Guimaraes, who was also banned for Tuesday’s game, could well get 60 minutes or so before someone like Willock comes on for the final half hour?
A few I’m unsure on are forgotten man Matt Targett – Kelly could move to left-back if Krafth is fine to start at centre-back and Miguel Almiron just in case we’re keen to protect him ahead of a potential January exit – but it’s my best guess at what promises to be a fairly new-look side.
OUT: Dubravka, Livramento, Botman, Burn, Hall, Tonali, Joelinton, Willock, Murphy, Isak, Gordon.
IN: Vlachodimos, Trippier, Schar, Kelly, Targett, Bruno, Longstaff, Lewis Miley, Almiron, Barnes, Osula
How do you see us lining up a little later on?

At least 6 international players in there, they just need to perform, no excuses.
